My friend in Bashkortostan.

plexi: You did this for me, didn't you? But your second link simply goes to a list of languages spoken in European Russia; perhaps you meant this.

Bashkortostan is actually a fascinating place, and I for one (perhaps the only one, aside from plexi and mcwetboy's friend—great article, by the way) am very curious to see how they work out their ethnic situation. The Jamestown Foundation has an out-of-date but very informative article on the political/ethnic situation; there's a tripod site with language links, and a geocities site with some Bashkortostan links, most of which are broken or otherwise useless, but that's Bashkortostan for you.

And let's not forget Bashkir curly horses! (By gad, I'm going to breathe life into this thread yet...)

Bashkir-Bashi in the Public Eye

I know you're all dying to know whether Murtaza Rakhimov is going to run again in June; here's the inside dope. A third term would be unconstitutional, but... forget it, Jake, it's Bashkortostan.

Before this drops off the front page, I just want to assure everyone that Bashkir Airlines is not to blame.
