Latest Japanese Technology: Now you can scan in your entire body. Dozens have done so already with quite interesting results (last link might not be work-safe), even the semi-web-famous Justin Hall.

I think that's probably exactly the point. That and the photocopier-lighting, which is probably pretty hard to achieve otherwise.
I think the best policy is not to ask questions of the Japanese. Just roll with it.
