Teardrop trailers were all the rage from the '30s to the '50s, and in vogue today with vintage aficionados. Some are woodies, some are made for motorcycles and most have lots of personality crammed into truly small space. The build-it-yourself bug spread with this 1947 Mechanix Illustrated article (pdf file alert) complete with plans. Follow one man's contemporary build-from-scratch adventure detailed in a photos essay, or get plans to build your own.

This brings back some memories. My dad had vintage Popular Mechanics, Amateur Scientist and other publications from when he was in his 20's and 30's. Popular Mechanics always had really interesting projects, and Amateur Scientist had really interesting science projects that can (somewhat safely) be done in the home.

I haven't seen any modern magazines like these. Are there any periodicals with interesting projects in them?

being something of a claustrophile, i love the idea of this small a space. And you gotta love the faux-aerodynamics. [this is good]. You rock, Ma'am!

For a while there I thought you were talking about some sort of movie advertising format that I didn't know about.

"Let's all go to the lobby and get ourselves some snacks!"

And some of these old trailers are turned into motels.

brochure

My gods, Madame, you are forever finding links to things that I then do not think I can live without. ;)

I adore these. I must have one for when the boy is old enough to go camping. He and his dad can sleep in the tent...me, I'm getting the camper. :)
