How can this poll expect to be taken seriously when Mariah Carey's Glitter isn't in the top ten, huh?
posted by mr_crash_davis at 1:46 PM on January 22, 2003

Wouldn't the "ten most popular" be based strictly on sales? Shouldn't this be called "the ten most favorite albums based on a bunch of internet nerd's sort-term memory?"

Which, as nthdegx has pointed out, is why Linkin Park are at #4.

How can this poll expect to be taken seriously when 5 Smashing Pumpkins albums are in the top 30?

i don't want to spoil anyone's fun here, so let's play a word game: rearrange the following words into a grammatically correct sentence: rigging i vote smell.

who the hell are CKY?! are they that band from the 60s that influenced a whole generation of musicians by pushing the musical envelope in previously unknown and unimagined ways? no? oh. are they the band from the late 80s that spawned a decade's worth of copyists by daringly exploring uncharted musical waters, taking the tired old traditional guitar-bass-drums verse-chorus-verse format by the scruff of the neck and creating something startlingly fresh? pardon? no? oh. who are they then?

This would have been stupid and worthless even if it the results were legitimate.

There are two "CKY" records in the top ten.

From the Amazon.com page for CKY Vol. 2:

Album Description
this double CD set features 1 CD of prank calls, and 1 CD of music used in the CKY movies (such as remixes of CKY volume 1, the infamous christmas songs from the CKY landspeed video, bran's chinese freestyle from CKY2K, testing from the eS menikmati video, genesis 12a from toy machine's jump off a building video, and much more.) this double-album is very limited, and only available from amazon.

And here I thought this was an opportunity for the extraordinary people of Metafilter to make a difference with all their musical knowledge by stuffing the ballot box!
posted by oh posey at 2:00 PM on January 22, 2003

Oh, I stuffed the ballot box, all right, but I can't boost Polka! Polka! Polka! into the Hot 100 all by myself.

Come on, people. Do it for Wisconsin.
posted by mr_crash_davis at 2:04 PM on January 22, 2003

Beyond the CKY ballot-stuffing, there's all the Cure fans stuffing it, too: five of their albums are in the top 20.

Sheesh.

Crash Davis is one of my favorite movie characters ever. CKY were the openers on the ill-fated Guns N' Roses tour.

I glanced at the Top ten and can only say, DEAD ON ACCURATE. For the rest of the top 100, I don't think I've seen a more eye opening look at our musical landscape. I wouldn't have said it aloud before, but after seeing Jacob Dylan's Wallflowers album "Bringing Down the Horse" higher than any of his father's work, I realize that I've always known this to be a fair judgement of the two artists. Excuse me while I go crap on my music collection, except for my Smashing pumpkins and Cure CDs.

I love the Cure and Desintigration is a fricking AWFUL album. I think this is a ploy by a company that puts out CKY, Cure, and Linkin Park albums to get your email addresses.

"I think this is a ploy by a company that puts out CKY, Cure, and Linkin Park albums to get your email addresses."

That's OK, I gave them yours instead.

Hey - instead of commenting on this obviously meaningless list, how 'bout we all submit our fave disc ever? Mine is REM: Automatic for the People (runner up - Elvis Costello: Get Happy)
posted by davebush at 3:02 PM on January 22, 2003

it's about popularity, not quality. this results will be skewed because as mentioned above, it's only open to internet users... also, it's an english language poll and so far only seems to reflect anglo artists. after all, isn't Engelbert Humperdinck the most popular recording artist in the entrie world? or was that Elvis? now i'm confused.

CKY stands for "Camp Kill Yourself" and is a hardcore band from either Penn or New Jersey (I forget).

They're also associated with Jackass, sort of (Jess Margera, one of the band members, is the brother of Bam Margera, professional skateboarder) and they got a little bit of air time back when Jackass was on the air.

And Surfer Rosa by the Pixies would be my top album of all time.

Only three Pink Floyd and one Led Zeppelin album in the top 50? Obviously, this is either crap or is only voted on by children who wouldn't know good music if it jumped up and bit them on the arse.
posted by dg at 3:35 PM on January 22, 2003

SweetJesus: Surfer Rosa was about #4 on my list (don't remember exactly where I ranked it).

I had to put it all out on the table & vote for Are We Not Men by Devo as my #1. It was ranked in the low 1000's.

At least Loveless by My Bloody Valentine was ranked 95.

CKY were the openers on the ill-fated Guns N' Roses tour

Was there ever a well-fated G'n'R tour??

I was gonna vote for PPP, crash, but Shatner won out.

Hmmm... I'd have voted for Rage Against The Machine's first album. Good to see Dylan and Lou on the list though.

Aacheson - you love the Cure and think Disintegration is an awful album? I can't imagine that many Cure fans would agree - full marks for taking an unusual stance!

Right now "Disintegration" by The Cure is number one.

That's a sign of armageddon isn't it? I voted for the hell of it and it didn't recognize Jason & the Scorchers. Oh dear.
posted by jonmc at 6:10 AM on January 23, 2003

I know jonmc...it didn't recognize a few of mine either...but at least we voted for the hell of it...

Hard to pick just ten but ...#1- Sex Pistols - Never Mind the Bollocks, #2- Nashville Pussy - Let Them Eat Pussy, #3- Black Flag - Damaged, #4- Aerosmith - Rocks, #5- The Pixies - Surfer Rosa, #6- Sly and the Family Stone - Greatest Hits, #7-The Butthole Surfers - Locust Abortion Technician, #8- Ted Nugent - Double Live Gonzo, #9- Suicidal Tendencies - Suicidal Tendencies. #10- Bad Brains - I against I...and oh so many more like Nirvana -Hormoaning.

Stop.

Hey, I know! Let's all post what we would rate as the top ten albums of all time.

Ehem. Sorry for the sarcasm, I can just see this thread getting out of control rather quickly.
