I don't have one, and I won't get one, but I think it's pretty clear that tattoos are sexy. A disappointing corollary would be that I am not.

How many of FHM's "top 100 sexiest women" are sexy because they have tatoos?

...and why don't FHM readers just buy real porn anyway?

How many of the world's top 100 sexiest women have tattoos?

None. For some reason, I've always been rather puzzled and turned off by tattoos. Same with piercings, despite the fact that I was the first and only male in Choctaw High School to sport an earring - in 1984.

None. By definition.

Even if you don't think tatoos are or aren't "sexy", it's hard to get around the fact that all the women on this list are fairly young (or were young when they died).

Maybe a better question to answer with this data would be: Are tatoos currently more prevalent among women over 30 or under 30? The answer is pretty clear, even if you didn't have this list in front of you.

Why, right here.

Hmph.

Hmph yourself, honey. I give you a single-link post to a rich site worthy of exploration and you stop at the single link? Is it any wonder some of us prefer multi-linking? ;)

But since you asked:

My favorite tattoo ever is on a much-older relative of mine - a Roadrunner that he had done during his Navy tenure, (no doubt) in some South Seas port, while (no doubt) intoxicated. Cheap inks, so it's very faded and blurry, but still there. I think a crappy rendition of a Chuck Jones cartoon from an important period of your life can be a much better tattoo than a carefully plotted rendition of Jimi across your back.

My second favorite is on my best friend from growing up's thigh - a black and white 007 logo; like this, without the "JAMES BOND".

I think the 'barbed-wire around the ankle' tattoos are declasse, as are the 'flames down the arm', but that's just because they're so cliche at this point. Regardless, it's all a matter of taste.

An example of tattoo-getting that I think is pretty cool is the nine actors from "Fellowship of the Ring" who made up the Fellowship all getting the elvish symbol for '9'.

i guess i fall in the middle opinion-wise on this, i loved some of the ink that came out of this thread and my wife has a pretty nifty binary ring around her arm (think "0100110100...") i myself, remain unmarked.

i guess i'm afraid of that neato bar-code looking like shit when i inevitably swell with old age ;) Still, i think plenty of the women listed here are attractive, tattoos or no.

TimeFactor:None. By definition.

Not to be pedantic, but which definition precludes sexy women from having tattoos?

Best tattoo I ever saw was on a man in a suit in an elevator once. Coming out of his hairline and going down the back of his neck into his collar was a zipper. Very subtle, but incredibly cool.

Well, I for one, am crushed, simply crushed that I didn't make the top 100 list again this year. Even with my groovy Sam I Am holding a platter of Green Eggs and Ham tattoo. Reviewers these days...no respect for the geeks.

skryche, that's a very provocative insight. I have no idea whether it's true, but it's a fascinating thing to think about.

The problem with tattoos is that however nice they look when they go on, they gradually start looking worse as the ink spreads. If you've ever seen guys with WWII-era tats, you know what I'm talking about. Those anchors and bluebirds look like hell. It's possible to remove tattoos with lasers (works better with darker colors), but it costs about a hundred times as much as putting them on. I foresee a great future for dermatologists when the fashion changes in ten years, and tattoos start looking soooo 1990's.

-not always appropriate on an airplane. Although, they do sell porn at every airport convenient store. I've always thought about openly reading a copy of Big Black Butt on a flight but never went through with it.

Halle Berry - tattoo - flower on derriere

Charlize Theron - tattoos on feet

Funny thing is, I thought Jennifer Lopez did have a tattoo.

I don't see how anyone could dismiss all tattoos as being not sexy. There are good ones and bad ones, just like any other aspect of fashion.

Tattooed people are not hot because tattoos send the message: "I am boring because I am the worst kind of trendslave conformist, one who thinks they're some kind of unique maverick."

And now I've got to go Google Leeann Tweeden (spelled wrong on the list, but still a great name).

"I am boring because I am the worst kind of trendslave conformist, one who thinks they're some kind of unique maverick."

Funny how, as soon as something becomes trendy, you are automatically a conformist and a trendslave if you do it, regardless of your personal reasons for doing so. I have a tattoo. I am not a trendslave or a conformist; on the other hand, I don't consider myself a "unique maverick" either. My tattoo is special to me and I like to tell people about it when they see it (which is rare) and ask me. I usually like your comments, jonmc, but this kind of broad generalization is pretty annoying and even a little insulting.

. . . it seems that she only actually worked at Hooters for two days.

Leeann enjoys riding dirt bikes, classic literature, impressionist art, traveling, and music.

She sounds perfect!

I love you mediareport.

Yes, yes, but do you have any tattoos? :)

And what starvingartist said. Stuff like this seems to bring out people who apparently can't distinguish between "X is not for me, thanks" and "You're an idiot for doing X."
posted by mediareport at 9:59 AM on January 31, 2003

I was under the impression tattoos have gone from uniquely maverick and zoomed right past trendslave conformity (say, in 1996) to being something a lot of people just kind of do by default these days. They're like nose rings and don't really signify rebellion at all except to assistant principals.
