Courtney's "spread" in the upcoming Q Magazine really proves that she has a knack for publicity. Page two is here and here's the third page. NSFW. Not safe for anywhere, really.

Madonna's done all this, and 10 years ago, too

Wolf, I disagree: ms Ciccone's book was a very carefully planned -- if tasteless and moroninc -- publicity stunt

Love's face in the Q pics tells a different story -- out-of-control ex-junkie back on smack and on whatever she happened to find in London that night. (btw, I like the Lanesborough a little bit less, tonight -- terrible taste in guests)
She has the right to shoot, snort and ingest whatever she wants -- unfortunately she's a single mom of a little child, and that makes the "vedova allegra" routine much more alarming

TimeFactor,
yeah, that was a fun tagline, I agree, straight out of South Park

dash slot,
she used to be a stripper, so she's accustomed to be naked in the presence of strangers. also, at least once she performed an entire song (the aptly-titled "Awful") topless. the video is all over WinMX/Kazaalite/Xnap et similia

How one person can spend their life covered in bruises is baffling
less baffling if you consider that junkies are very often covered in bruises -- smack can make you itch all over, and you go on scratching the skin until it breaks -- and seldom heals

Oh, thhpppbt on most of you.

Okay, so I am incredibly biased, seeing as Love helped lead the "girls can be punk rock too" movement in the early 1990's that changed my life, but I sure prefer the Courtney of this article than the pearl-wearing model/actress, "oh I just love Sharon Stone" phase from a few years ago. (And, at the risk of seeming incredibly naive, I think it is just as likely that Courtney Love realizes what gets her press and what images will help fuel her recording career, rather than she's actually back in the full junkie swing again.) I've never seen her do anything vaguely public that hasn't caused the general outpouring of 'junkie', or 'talentless', or 'ugly', so I guess it's kind of reassuring that some things never change. (end of rant)

I'm with y6y6y6 on this one (and jess). Courtney is talented, and from interviews she seems fairly intelligent. Really, her life is a form of performance art. It sounds like some people are a little too accustomed to 'corporate' art, retouched photographs taken through lens filters and celebs who act sweet for their press junkets.

Art isn't pretty. In the words of the lovely Sandra Bernhard, whose tradition both Madonna and Courtney have followed, "Please just give me an old-fashioned, big tittied, sweaty bitch of rock and roll."
posted by troybob at 4:47 PM on February 3, 2003

I will always treasure the video where Madonna's being interviewed by Kurt Loder, and Courtney starts throwing shit at them from off-camera. The identical sphincter-face disapproval expressions Madonna and Loder both get are priceless. Madonna's like "How dare you steal my spotlight!" and Loder is like "How dare you steal Madonna's spotlight!" Great stuff.

badstone, punk has nothing to do with it--she's gained entry to the mainstream as a means of undermining it; no matter what kind of work she has done or what designers she has worn, at every point in her career she has conveyed its lifestyle and values as bullshit.

That's OK, though. U2 did kind of the same thing in the mid-90's, and most people didn't get it then either.

Actually, the fascinating thing here is that people are leaping on the "attention-grabbing whore" label rather than pointing out that here is a bruised, fairly ordinary looking 38 year old woman who is showing herself off in the same way that people who like looking at ladies would love to see only young, nubile, silicon-enhanced bimbos rather than the "harsh reality" of chicks who don't fit into slinky skirts, are devoid of all body fat and possess the most labored anatomy seen since Michelangelo (minus the talent).

Granted, I don't find Courtney Love attractive in the least and I think her actions in the recent Nirvana suit were deplorable. But I applaud her for having the temerity to stir up the current Maxim mentality like this. If anything, Western culture needs more women to break the ridiculous fantasies that men perpetuate upon women, both within celebrities and the commonweal alike.

Farkfilter indeed.

She *is* a silicon-enhanced bimbo. She's had her boobs done, her nose done, and god-knows-what else. And this is a woman who's heralded as the progenitor of today's women in rock, a founding (ha!) riot grrrrl? The same woman who often espoused her love for her (pre-enhanced) body? The feminist icon who achieved fame by marrying up? Whatever. I'd suggest that she doesn't even merit the scrutiny this thread gives her, but OTOH, I do *so* love to hate her.

Well.. yeah. Courtney Love brought the "punk rock girl" concept of the 90s to, in my case, girls living in a tiny fishing village on the coast of nowhere. Sometimes you need a little marketability to reach the target audience.

And if it were a male rock star gettin' naughty for a photo shoot, I bet most of y'all wouldn't say boo.

(I'm unaware of any photo shoots involving Lenny Kravitz having his ass hairs removed, but will do a search on filepile right now, for contrast.)

Misogynist how? Courtney Love is a media whore ne plus ultra. As a performer, her career appears to be tanking, thus she is going to greater and greater lengths to be the center of attention. She has innumerable male counterparts in this game; Dennis Rodman comes to mind. Marilyn Manson will undoubtedly be heading down this road soon enough. Because when you have big cojones but little talent, your career trajectory is like a deflating party balloon, shrieking loudest and zipping around the room fastest right before it drops to the floor. And it has nothing to do with whether you're out parading your fake tits and macerated junkie ass.
posted by cowboy_sally at 12:26 PM on February 4, 2003

I will defend to the death (okay, hyperbole, but you know what I mean) the right of women to act, speak, make themselves known, and variously display themselves in the public eye, but this performance is evidence of wreckage, not courage.

And I loved Pretty on the Inside, which is a work of sheer brilliance, imo; Live Through This has great moments as well, and so does the underrated Celebrity Skin. Oh, and the riot grrls hated Courtney from the beginning; see Courtney's feud with Kathleen Hanna.
posted by jokeefe at 1:45 PM on February 4, 2003

the whole courtney love phenomenon rubs me the wrong way because while courtney espoused a feminist viewpoint after the release of live through this her actions ran counter to her backlash-quotin' ways in interviews. she regularly engaged in catfights with female musicians who are on smaller labels than her (mary lou lord, kath hanna, sleater-kinney, etc), got plastic surgery done, appeared in a movie about larry flynt, etc. i can't take her seriously because she fails to put her money where her mouth is. and i'm someone where feminism was influenced by punk rock.
