Okay, so I am incredibly biased, seeing as Love helped lead the "girls can be punk rock too" movement in the early 1990's that changed my life, but I sure prefer the Courtney of this article than the pearl-wearing model/actress, "oh I just love Sharon Stone" phase from a few years ago. (And, at the risk of seeming incredibly naive, I think it is just as likely that Courtney Love realizes what gets her press and what images will help fuel her recording career, rather than she's actually back in the full junkie swing again.) I've never seen her do anything vaguely public that hasn't caused the general outpouring of 'junkie', or 'talentless', or 'ugly', so I guess it's kind of reassuring that some things never change. I'm with y6y6y6 on this one (and jess). Courtney is talented, and from interviews she seems fairly intelligent. Really, her life is a form of performance art. It sounds like some people are a little too accustomed to 'corporate' art, retouched photographs taken through lens filters and celebs who act sweet for their press junkets. Art isn't pretty. In the words of the lovely Sandra Bernhard, whose tradition both Madonna and Courtney have followed, "Please just give me an old-fashioned, big tittied, sweaty bitch of rock and roll."

Actually, the fascinating thing here is that people are leaping on the "attention-grabbing whore" label rather than pointing out that here is a bruised, fairly ordinary looking 38 year old woman who is showing herself off in the same way that people who like looking at ladies would love to see only young, nubile, silicon-enhanced bimbos rather than the "harsh reality" of chicks who don't fit into slinky skirts, are devoid of all body fat and possess the most labored anatomy seen since Michelangelo (minus the talent). Granted, I don't find Courtney Love attractive in the least and I think her actions in the recent Nirvana suit were deplorable. But I applaud her for having the temerity to stir up the current Maxim mentality like this. If anything, Western culture needs more women to break the ridiculous fantasies that men perpetuate upon women, both within celebrities and the commonweal alike. Farkfilter indeed.

I will defend to the death (okay, hyperbole, but you know what I mean) the right of women to act, speak, make themselves known, and variously display themselves in the public eye, but this performance is evidence of wreckage, not courage.
And I loved Pretty on the Inside, which is a work of sheer brilliance, imo; Live Through This has great moments as well, and so does the underrated Celebrity Skin. Oh, and the riot grrls hated Courtney from the beginning; see Courtney's feud with Kathleen Hanna.

the whole courtney love phenomenon rubs me the wrong way because while courtney espoused a feminist viewpoint after the release of live through this her actions ran counter to her backlash-quotin' ways in interviews. she regularly engaged in catfights with female musicians who are on smaller labels than her (mary lou lord, kath hanna, sleater-kinney, etc), got plastic surgery done, appeared in a movie about larry flynt, etc. i can't take her seriously because she fails to put her money where her mouth is. and i'm someone where feminism was influenced by punk rock.
