Reality TV and the Public Trust I know none of you have ever watched Joe Millionaire, but PC Magazine has an interesting column (by John Dvorak no less) regarding the veracity thereof...

It's real. I know it's real. I know it's real. You can't tell me it's not real. I know it's real. I believe in Joe Millionaire. I know he will pick the woman who cares about who he is, not about how much money he does/doesn't have. Deep down, he's a good person who hates having to lie to these nice women. It's tearing him up inside! Can't you see that! It's so real!

Um...DUH. Similarly, I am virtually certain that some of the people who auditioned for "American Idol" were bogus -- plants, in other words. Once the original "Survivor" became a hit, all bets were off...there are ringers/plants/stooges involved in all of these "reality" shows, to some degree.
One thing pisses me off -- Dvorak's persistent whine about the government not stepping in to "do something." Hey, Dvorak -- as you pointed out, this is TV -- IT'S ONLY TV! If seeing Joe M. exposed as a fraud hurts your feelings, or makes you feel more cynical, or causes you to distrust your fellow man -- Get Over It.

In fact, if "Joe Millionaire" is scripted in any way, this is a breach of the public trust that should be investigated by Congress the same way the fake games shows were investigated. This is television, not movies. The media companies and the news organizations should be brought up to testify. The public is already too cynical and doesn't know what to believe. We're becoming Sovietized. We have to read gossip on the Net to have a hint at what might be going on.
Jesus. In light of government policies, human suffering, and countless horrors committed by the powerful over the weak worldwide, the author of this article is more than welcome to apologize at any time for the outright insulting assault on our intelligence with that one.
