Of course, had that movie been made only just now, I'm quite sure Hollywood would have replaced the word "stinking" with something else.

The first time I heard the 'stinking badge' reference was in an episode of Hill Street Blues - where Diablo warlord Jesus Martinez refuses some kind of deal with Captain Furillo, uttering those very words: We don't need no stinkin' badges.

Awesome! This is a family favourite; every time someone utters anything that sounds like badges we all reply that we don't need any stinking whatever it is. First heard it in Blazing Saddles. Thanks a lot owillis.

I might be hallucinating a faulty memory. I think the first time I heard the line was in the movie Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid I can even remember the scene of when they try to go straight by being body guards to protect a payroll delivery and they are stopped by some bandits claiming to be police or something Anyhow, it isn't listed on this page so I'm doubting myself

Lex, The old Bogart movie "Treasure of the Sierra Madre" has um, someone saying "we don't need no badges" - without the 'stinking' part. I think that's the earliest use of a variant of the phrase. I mention it because it's set in the West, like BCatSK.

Alright, I'm gonna totally eat some crow here. They just showed Butch and Sundance on AMC and just had to watch it beginning to end cause it was really starting to bug me and guess what? I was totally hallucinating and it was never in that movie.

um, duh on my part. I'd just scrolled down and missed the very first entry...hey, Lex, can you scoop a dollop of that crow on my plate? I just remember watching a Spanish-dubbed version of the movie in high-school Spanish class and almost falling out of my chair.

Anyway, Treasure of the Sierra Madres is worth watching, if not for the famous phrase then because it's totally awesome. Pretty much laid the foundation of the "now all we've got to worry about is each other" genre.
