Fascinating.

Just a moment ago I was doing Google searches, and...suddenly...it began to error out with the following message:

"Server Error
The server encountered a temporary error and could not complete your request.

Please try again in a minute or so"

Think we'll find out what's going on by looking HERE?

From what I understand, Google spans multiple machines at multiple server farms... all with their own local copies of the search DB's. (That's why people have noted different numbers for search results.)

So if service seems down when visiting http://www.google.com/ try http://google.com/ for a different IP, or ask ns1.google.com - ns4.google.com for another one. :)

The real interesting part to this is how Google is dominating the internet. Seriously, how fucked would you be if Google just disappeared tomorrow? At work, just about every programming or system administration problem can be solved with a quick Google Groups query. If I'm mucking about with my Linux box, Google gives me the answer. No other search engine comes anywhere near giving me the results that Google does. It can't be a good thing to rely on one company so much.

I saw someone recommending alltheweb. However I question a search engine who thinks that an incorrectly installed version of my tellyguide script is more relevant than the actual homepage.
My site comes up on 1 (2) and 3 if you search for tv advert music. Hopefully that doesn't seem much like a shameless plug, but it is the only way I could prove that it isn't all about paid listings... I don't pay for any of that stuff!

Fair enough. However, I can give you plenty of examples of sites which come top in google but are not listed in Teoma.

I tried to submit one of my sites to Teoma following your comment here (it's unlisted in Teoma (although they are listing some non-existent pages on another server which formed part of my site nearly six months ago), but comes top on the identical google search.

When I tried to submit the site, I was asked for $30 for a one year registration period.
