There's more than one way to skin swing a cat: Add the new Puma ads and upstanding PETA feminists have their work cut out for them. [vid.avi download thing; via Boing Boing.].

Uhhh... why do you have to be a feminist to be part of PETA?

Just wondering...

BTW: Most cats do idiotic things like that all the time. I almost squashed our stupid cat with the garage door when it was running away from the vacuum once. If only that AVI was better quality -- I have a feeling that was just clip copied from some king of "Funniest Home Videos" show -- you can't undo the past! :-)

So, do Puma shoes come with condoms now?

These shoes . . . do they vibrate?

I don't understand this post. How does the kitty video relate to the Puma ad? Are we discussing animal rights or blow jobs?
posted by Summer at 4:19 AM on March 11, 2003

I think we're meant to discuss ads that make us go yikes!, spit coffee on the keyboard, and scare the cat.
posted by mcwetboy at 4:21 AM on March 11, 2003

Perhaps we're discussing how people can be animals?

Or maybe we're debating wether a puma is a cat or not.

Summer beat me to it. I don't see much of a point in posting the two seemingly unrelated ads. It looks like a cheap attempt at eliciting some hysterical reaction from someone or at making some "PETA feminist" horribly upset. Very worth causes, both of them.

Whatever, Carlos.

The way advertisers feel freer to exploit cruelty to animals or exploitation of women? Isn't it strange to sell phones or shoes this way? With supposedly hip products? I am a feminist and an animal activist, btw.

Oh, in that case I'd say that the first ad is pretty juvenile and misjudged, considering how sophisticated mobile phone advertising usually is. The second ad I don't really understand. I don't think Puma's female target audience is going to think giving blow jobs in alleys and getting sperm on your leg is particularly aspirational. I suppose they thought it was sexy. They're idiots.
posted by Summer at 4:35 AM on March 11, 2003

I don't even think that Nokia spot is a real ad. Your source doesn't even seem to know for sure...so why pimp it out as if it's the real deal when it's not on tv? If it's not being used, in no way implies that Nokia thinks cats flying into walls is funny (or a good way to sell phones).

As for the Puma ads - whatever. Sex gets exploited in all kinds of advertising, and just because these ads are a little raunchier than the usual doesn't make them particularly demeaning to me.

The cat video was funny as hell. Anybody who feels bad seeing a cat do dumb shit like this doesn't appreciate why owning cats is so much fun. As for the puma ads, everybody knows girls who wear Nikes are considerate enough to not make such a mess.

Maybe it's just me, but I can't really believe that either one of those are actual ads... does anyone have proof that they're running anywhere?
posted by brand-gnu at 5:43 AM on March 11, 2003

SC, I don't think it's the girls making the mess. I'm with brand-gnu. They look fake. Mind you the Gucci pubic hair ad ran, so you never know.

Mind you the Gucci pubic hair ad ran,

Wow, Gucci makes pubic hair now? This luxury thing is getting out of hand...

afaiknow - from a Brazilian - the puma ads ran in Maxim, he scanned them and emailed to me. He could be lying of course, but it was big (famous) agency email in .br so I don't see why he should have been. [no his agency was not the one who did it]

(should i have said "self link?" to that old article there mebbe? here's a bonus one gucci ad NSFW)
posted by dabitch at 6:36 AM on March 11, 2003

Wouldn't it be nice to actually try to check out if the Puma ads are real before posting about them on the front page? The blowjob ads are all over the Internet, too bad no one seems to have found the actual ads on Puma's own website. Or to have located a magazine that's actually carried them ("my cousin's best friend knows this guy who saw them in FHM Thailand edition swear to God...")

The way advertisers feel freer to exploit cruelty to animals or exploitation of women?

Yeah, it never happened before

don't try and search pumas brazilian website for these ads. there's no website. [if it is a south american campaign puma.com won't carry any copies]

Uuuh, do you watch Telly in Australia and new zealand m'friend? That's where this ad airs.

it's a stunt kitty, of course.

Come on. I'd buy those shoes for a girl in a second. Two presents for her 18th birthday: Pumas, and a vintage high school uniform. Make that three presents for her 18th birthday: Pumas, a vintage high school uniform, and blue hair dye.

The real irony here is, that girl in the ad probably is a PETA supporter.

bad data in avi file source

Thanks God I didn't see the end of that video...

Of COURSE that Puma ad ran in Maxim. Why am I not shocked by that?

Pumas, blow jobs, and cats. Let's see how we can tie this all together once and for all.
posted by aacheson at 7:51 AM on March 11, 2003

Puma just called - there is no way these ads have anything to do with Puma. Not PUMA at all. He wants them images off the web. more at eleven.
posted by dabitch at 7:58 AM on March 11, 2003

Also, Puma told us all to "get a life."
posted by soyjoy at 8:55 AM on March 11, 2003

Um..the first link doesn't work, and the second one is a photoshopped picture of don king telling me not look at porn and signed 'jesus christ', which is obviously not a real ad.

. . .Is there something I'm missing. PETA?
posted by dgaicun at 10:04 AM on March 11, 2003

dgaicun, yeah, you're missing what was originally in that space, which I leave to someone more eloquent to describe, but which was not PETA-related. The new image looks like it escaped from this thread.

>The way advertisers feel freer to exploit cruelty to animals or exploitation of women?

I didn't see any bruises. Exactly how was the woman being exploited? Did they not pay her? Was she under duress?

If you have links so show how she wasn't paid, was abused, or was otherwised made to do the scene not of her own free will I'd need to see them. Otherwise I have no choice but to assume she willingly choose to be a paid participant on a Puma commercial.

To support the cruelty to animals perspective, I'd need proof that the video wasn't taken from file footage or someone's home movies. I'd also want to see that the cat wasn't coerced into the stunt. The avi is blurry enough I haven't a clue what the cat is lunging for. It might be a mouse, or it might just be animal stupidity/curiosity. My cat's dumb enough it decided to burn itself on the hot fireplace once.

Since I haven't proof of anything, I cannot assume that either of these companies did any wrongdoing.

>Isn't it strange to sell phones or shoes this way?

Dunno. If it sells more, good for them. If it doesn't, feh.

Commercials have always been about being unusual. It gets you noticed. Even if this one was a fake, it sure worked.
