So the sarcastic comments... whatever, it's MeFi. To those of you asking "what's the point of this?" I assume you are male. As a man myself, I find myself very attracted to models, and I don't see anything wrong with that. But to live in a society where to be a successful woman you must be a beautiful sex object is very difficult, and I do see something wrong with that. Where's the middle ground? Should businessmen continue to be allowed to make hire and fire decisions according to their dick? Should naturally beautiful women refrain from using their looks to their advantage? There is a lot of substance to this post, and frankly I'm disappointed that there is no legitimate dialogue happening here.

(Zekiniskia, I think we're all a little less thick-headed than you give us credit for. Yes, we understand the implicit commentary on the price of one's (esp. a female's) physical appearance, but the execution is not exactly subtle or original, and similar arguements regarding exploitation & self-esteem have been well covered on MeFi over the years. Maybe if the poster had provided a thoughtful angle it would have inspired a different discussion?)

Execution was a bit rough on this, but that doesn't really seem to omit the larger point. I think it's valid to make, if just as another reminder of a cultural reality that's easy to overlook. It's easy for images to present what is desirable, helpful to see images presenting what, for some, is the cost of trying to fit within narrow parameters. I agree that it's good to appreciate beauty, but it does seem like there's an imbalance of messages on the role that physical appearence plays in the larger spectrum of someone's worth. That said, all the puns on "thing" are making me smile...Thanks Metafilter!!

it would be funnier to me if the site depicted all the water, air, gel, and other sundry stuffing materials in those VS bras accidentally bursting out everywhere to reveal victoria's other dirty little secret. but i'm just bitter because they make all the prettiest bras for the small boobed girls.

fortunately, all the links at the bottom go to the real Victoria's Secret so when I'm through being grossed-out by a not-super-interesting series of photos [I've seen bulimia done better, and more accurately, and with people fully dressed] I could order myself some nice cotton PJ's. At some level it's a mixed message, as delmoi notes. Sure it's making a point about underwear magazines and body image, but it's also showing a lot of skin. Nice touch to link to VS's own privacy statement, though. There are ways to do good thought-provoking parody sites, but to me this isn't one of them.

Since the current trend is to more fit models than waifs the "puke" factor is not very high these days. Of course, that won't keep people from assuming there must be something secretly horrible about thin people. God forbid it might be diet, exercise and hard work - cause that would mean if the Oprah alikes would get off the couch and hit a gym something good would happen. Much easier to blame their genetics and assume thin chicks are miserable.
