Apparently its a &quot;Nothofagus gunnii&quot; or &quot;false beech&quot; canoeguide and is now thought to be more closely related to the Birch tree although its origins and close relatives are still uncertain. 

I find it amazing that the Fagus hasn&apos;t changed in 35 million years. Especially considering when these trees are destroyed by fire, they can take up to 1000 years to recover.</description>
