What is Google.ac? March 28, 2003 12:41 PM Subscribe
Google.ac is some kind of fake Google site that seems to return nothing but sponsored results. Is it supposed to fool somebody?

Can, or would, Google take legal action in something such as this I wonder. posted by bluedaniel at 1:15 PM on March 28, 2003
That logo, if you notice on the real Google main page, has a little "TM" on it, so this is definitely grounds for a lawsuit. posted by paladin at 1:23 PM on March 28, 2003
Apparently .ac is the Professional Domain. Because nothing says "professional" like Ascension Island. Hey, isn't that where the Macross crash landed?
Also, there doesn't appear to be anything at google.cx. Anyone not at work want to try googlese.cx? posted by PinkStainlessTail at 1:23 PM on March 28, 2003
Appears to be a false front for epilot.com (at least according to a PHP error on their results page, which I unfortunately didn't copy when I saw it and now can't reproduce.)
I do enjoy the first search result I received from them, though: "Find local Fraud at smartpages.com" posted by ook at 1:25 PM on March 28, 2003

I imagine that even the most naive visitor would think something amiss when the terms "Iraq War" returned all of one result. posted by BigPicnic at 1:42 PM on March 28, 2003
I see I can buy MetaFilter at Ebay.

Oh god. My first search was "poop" too. I picked my mefi handle on a quick whim. What is wrong with me? posted by thebigpoop at 4:02 PM on March 28, 2003
The search term "Poo", on the other hand, returns "IQSeek" first, and there seems to be some sense in that, doesn't there?
What do you mean, thebigpoop? Doesn't everybody search "poop" first? posted by taz at 4:52 PM on March 28, 2003
A revolution in searching: A completely commercial lassiez-fair search engine. Why, if they can't afford an ad, they probably don't have much to offer! posted by skallas at 11:45 PM on March 28, 2003
