You were right...that link was gross. I didn't believe you.
The maggot art is so delicate - the one called Tulip is really beautiful. I wish they'd have some movies of the maggots trailing the paint over the paper, though. posted by iconomy at 6:43 PM on April 12, 2003
nice linkage jearbear. i was pleased to see the link to the missoula maggots and maggotfest. i have played in the tournament twice and have attended the festival 5 times now. missoula becomes an insane, beer-fueled, riot of a town! it's like a violent mardi-gras, but with less boobs. posted by car_bomb at 7:23 PM on April 12, 2003

I saw some of the "larval therapy" on some Discovery/TLC show a couple of years ago...and it was bizarrely, strangely hypnotic. Gross, disgusting, and creepy...and yet I couldn't look away.
The maggot of choice is the Black Soldier Fly. At least for waste management.
It can dispose of nigh any one living thing, so long as it s not high in cellulose.
What you do is throw the 'things you want to be rid of' in a pit. Make sure the pit has a 45 degree wall. The BSF can get out, any other maggots can't. Why are you worried about others? Well, the blowflies/flesh flies can carry bacteria that can effect humans. BSF's don't have the bacteria issue.
The maggots will crall the 45 degree walls, and into a collection bucket. You can then take the collection bucket of maggots and feed them to 'yar critters' Fish, foul, etc la.
1 lbs of maggots get rid of 3 lbs of material.
Here's what else is neat, if you own herps. The maggots will gutload REALLY easy. They will eat 'fresh' greens too. posted by rough ashlar at 5:57 AM on April 13, 2003
