Police said gunfire from an AK-47 assault rifle erupted near the John McDonogh High School gymnasium at about 10:30 a.m. Police do not yet know how the gun was smuggled onto the campus, which has metal detectors and is patrolled by four armed security officers.

Interesting. I assume the rifle could have been disassembled and taken in piece by piece to make it less bulky, but that doesn't get around the metal detectors.

I thought the liberating Bush line was just a joke. Simmer down, people. The NRA reference was a bit of politicizing, but I feel confident that Mr. Helms is aware that New Orleans troubles have little to do with George Bush. I think we can all agree that an AK-47 in a high school is pretty fucking apalling.

Hmmm...I'm guessing that TJH is referring to the AK-47's widespread use in countries supplied with arms by the former Soviet Union...e.g. Afghanistan, Iraq...
