AntiMonoglotFilter

Oh, and the Dutch word for thanks is Dank, similar to the German word danke. There are a lot of similar words between the two languages, but don't tell that to the Dutch.

"Give me back my grandfather's bicycle!"

Hell, it goes both ways. Many Germans feel Dutch is simply a crappy dialect of German and refuse to speak it.

Honestly, I think a person with good knowledge of either language could understand someone who was speaking the other slowly and clearly (and light on the idioms) without having studied it.

I think "Danke" translates more closely to "Bedankt" or maybe "Dankje." I may have to eat my words on this, but I've never heard anybody say just "Dank."

This may also be because I live in the Netherlands now and have Dutch on the brain but I notice a hell of a lot of Dutch on the Internet for a language with relatively few speakers. Perhaps it's because the Netherlands is second most wired country in Europe per capita (PDF link) behind Iceland.

At any rate, I imagine the native Dutch speaking members of Metafilter are going to just sit back and giggle over this thread.

</off topic>

As a Dane, I find it relatively easy to read Dutch - superficially it seems to be a mix of English, German and Danish. Understanding spoken Dutch is another story altogether. (LOL!!!!!!!!)

So is Dowie that famous in Holland, and is it for his footballing skills of his pug-ugliness? Ian Dowie, big in the Netherlands. Who'd have thunk it.

ubi -- Sorry I didn't explain it (I hate explaining jokes that people already get). Here's the story for those not in-the-know:

When the Germans invaded Holland in the second World War, one of worst crimes it commited against the Dutch people (of course, you should keep this in perspective) was to take their bicycles away from them (bikes are probably the most useful form of transportation among the narrow streets and flat terrain of the country). They were supposed to give them back to their owners when the war ended, but never did. This has created some resentment for older Dutch people. Combine this with the boom in the German automotive industry, and Germany's proximity with Holland, and the resentment turns to outspoken anger.

See, a lot of German tourists frequently make the mistake of trying to drive around, say, Amsterdam, and frequently get lost or go down a one-way street the wrong way. Older Dutch people took to screaming at Germans in their cars to "Give me back my bicycle!" (you can tell they're German cars because of the large 'D' sticker near the license plate). Over time, this has progressed to a general insult to Germans, but since most people are too young to remember the Nazi occupation, they scream stuff like "Give me back my grandfather's bike!" or the like.

Anyway, that's the joke.

A funny little footnote to this joke: about ten years ago, a meeting of European nations was held in Amsterdam, and all the heads of the different countries were supposed to go on this bicycle ride throughout the city. The German chancellor Helmut Kohl thought this might be in bad taste (they know the history and the joke), so he decided to walk the route instead. This gave the procession of Amsterdammers plenty of time to line the route and scream at him variations of the bike joke, such as "You owe me a bike!" and "Give me back my grandfathers bicycle, you fucking Nazi asshole!" Yet another reason to love the Dutch.
