Smoking Gun TV

The Smoking Gun TV show will be debuting this summer on Court TV, hosted by the Daily Show's Mo Rocca. Also in the website-to-television trend, Classmates.com's new reality show premieres on Fox in June. No word on the Metafilter pilot yet.

Weird that they'd put Mo Rocca as the host. I guess a lot of the smoking gun stuff is done in humor, essentially making fun of celebrities, but a lof of their stuff is pretty serious and I figured they'd put someone less jokey in charge.

I love Mo. I with I got Court TV, this looks like it'll be good.

No word on the Metafilter pilot yet.

Casting for the cartoon, however, has been underway for some time now.

As a serious observation, I hope both of these have more staying power than the failed "You Don't Know Jack!" attempt.

Couldn't care less about the show top, but Mo' Mo is always Mo' Betta.

"You Don't Know Jack" would've worked IF they'd stayed true to the damn game-- which was already much like a TV show to begin with-- and kept up the fast pace and cleverness of the questions. "YDKJ" the show was more like a halfhearted satire of game shows.

But how exactly will they make a show out of TSG? Or most any website where the star is a bunch of documents, for that matter? I guess they could slowly scroll up the screen while Rocca narrates and cracks wise. And, probably, gets sued.

I wonder: will they keep the They Might Be Giants-penned theme song? It's not like TMBG are strangers to TV themes.

Rocca is also a regular on NPR's Wait Wait Don't Tell Me. err, so I've been told...

So now there will Classmates popups on TV too? Great! I just can't get enough of them.

And for the boffo-socko action-adventure series, as well.

Last night I watched a 2 hour feature film about Suzanne Somers and the Three's Company epic. And you say there's a show coming up about documents? And another one about highschool reunions of people I don't know?

Has there ever been a better time to be alive?

I'm sure there's huge market share for a scintillating blend of Beat the Geeks and Meet the Press.

I like Mo Rocca quite a bit, but Court TV is a horrible, horrible plague of a channel. I hope this doesn't lead to his leaving the Daily Show.

Don't forget to throw in some X-files and O'Reily Factor for the conspiracy theorists and the right wingers.

And owner of the Smoking Gun don't forget (scroll to bottom of page)
