Dowry Deaths: In India, it is estimated that more than 5,000 women are killed each year because their in-laws consider their dowries inadequate. A tiny percentage of their murderers are brought to justice. Good for her. A small step towards ending this madness.

She's a very lucky woman - the groom could have waited until after the wedding. Her family could have refused to back her up. Yes, she was courageous, but she also happened to be very fortunate in her circumstances.

OK...here's a question.... since dowries are illegal in India, and the guy asked for more dowry money... will her parents get into trouble with the law too? I mean, shouldn't they also be arrested for giving a dowry in the first place?

Yes, she was courageous, but she also happened to be very fortunate in her circumstances. Isn't the risk involved what made her so courageous in the first place? I'm really proud of her, especially her willingness and desire to be a role model for other young women in similar situations. It takes people like her to make societal changes.
