Marijuana possession law 'erased'Possessing less than 30 grams of marijuana is no longer against the law in Ontario, a Windsor judge says in a ruling released yesterday that compounds the chaos over Canada's pot laws. And it's a long weekend too. (btw, Ontario is a province in Canada that includes Toronto).

Oh, sorry, it seems to be illegal to grow it. So you can't produce it yourself, and no one can bring it into the country or sell it to you. Perhaps you can legally steal it from others? I don't governments should be encouraging theft.

Gee quonsar it's like Starbucks (Starbuds coming soom).

Doesn't it grow naturally as a weed? Used to in Washington DC. Perhaps a few seeds droped in a field and a "wild harvest" would be legal.

And trafficking laws aren't enforced much up here for pot. They're kept on the books to give the cops something to nail organised crime with and so that Canadian airlines don't become mules for international shipments (couple times a year the RCMP find a half-ton or so of weed stuck in the belly of a plane at Pearson Airport).

30 grams is about 1 ounce. About a $200 street value here in Omaha, or so I've been told... That's way less than a plant weighs.

It's too bad you still can't grow a plant for personal use. I've heard that getting a license to grow it for medical reasons isn't that hard though.

It won't carry through. This is one (provincial) judge, casting down a single possession law, and not yet appealed. Meanwhile, the federal government, is moving ahead with its new pot legislation (hooray!), but all signs suggest it's been heavily watered down (not-hooray!) due to American threats and lobbying (double-not-hooray!). Though possession of small quantities will be decriminalized (not legalized), the fine for minor possession is in excess of $100, and the fine for growing is skyrocketing even further. The cops will likely be more likely to go after smokers, as each kid caught is $150 for the coffers - whereas before they could expect only a trial with stakes so low it wasn't worth bothering.

In other news Colorado's doing just fine with some of their new laws thank you very much. I just wrote about it in my blog and found this thread astoundingly, mystically, synchronous with what I'd just gotten done writing about.

I was once arrested for possession of a small amount, and plead it down to littering. $500 fine, no criminal record.

Got the impression that it was a pretty common way of handling these cases, at least with clean-cut college boys.

Also, it is extremely tempting for me to quote Pulp Fiction again.
