WOW that was extremely narrow-minded and egotistical. Advertising design should focus on making visual experiences that users will enjoy and remember. This guy says it should focus on kissing designers asses and rolling in money. The script was pretty poorly written, and doesn't scan well. Moreover, if this is supposed to be a testament to the beauty and importance of advertising design, well, it's pretty poorly designed. There's definitely a point to be made on the importance of advertising design, but sadly this isn't it.

The script was pretty poorly written, and doesn't scan well. Moreover, if this is supposed to be a testament to the beauty and importance of advertising design, well, it's pretty poorly designed. Agreed - you'd think someone who was so obsessed with advertising and design - i.e. getting a message across - would at least make sure he capitalized the word "I". Nitpicky, yeah, but spelling errors tend to kill what little credibility there was.

Nice attitude, zero style. Obviously Mr. Castanon doesn't understand the products he advertises. He should wonder how he can come with Samsung before attempting this again.

I don't understand... in the "More" link, he says "use your talents to make the world a better place," listing dozens of social causes that "need a voice." If I'd only seen that second animation, I'd guess this guy was a perfect candidate for FTF. With my own eyes I've seen the gobs and gobs of glorious talent sitting around masturbating in the advertising industry, and let me tell you: it is damn sad. The guy's response to the article shows how powerful these people are. They have the means and talent to make a point like nobody's business. With my own eyes I saw the crap the advertising kids would whip just for fun around the office, and it was always polished, artful, brilliant. These people have talent, sense, and tools that make them incredibly potent. Fuck with them at your own risk, and be prepared to be retaliated against with wit, pizzazz, and high production values (as demonstrated above). I don't think it's such a bad idea to encourage them to put all this media power to some use besides shilling. I was always glad to see a top ad agency do some work for a non-profit that had bought some ad space, but had minimal creative budget. Screw "educational aids" and "industrial publicaitons," anyway. Whatever happened to art?

i am really quite confused. one was pure hatred of the adbusters (year 2000?) statement. the other was a restatement of the adbusters (year 2000?) statement. which one am i supposed to take as sarcasm? whoops, didn't capitalize me i's.

That was cool... but I still don't get it. Obviously Castanon cares about something other than shilling product. Perhaps he just didn't want to hear it from Adbusters? I have to admit, although I think that Adbusters' hearts are in the right place and many of their campaigns are cool, I completely lost faith in them after reading Kalle Lasn's book Culture Jam. Wasn't there a "worst book ever read" thread earlier today? It was up there for me. Blecch. Check it out (if you can get your hands on it without paying) and you too may be surprised to find it's an empty rant, rife with gems like "we're not feminists" and "we're not cool."

I think a lot of people are missing the satire and irony in this piece. Or maybe I'm just nuts and got it completely the wrong way round. Anyway, Luis Castanon kicks ass.

Those who hate Adbusters (as I do), may enjoy Stay Free, which tackles similar topics but doesn't take itself quite so seriously.
