Buy your porn now! In a little over two weeks, you will no longer be able to purchase anything in Ebay's mature categories, or many other forms of online adult amusement, using PayPal. New rules being implemented and enforced by PayPal follow [with a bit of coercion, some claim ] new rules laid down by Visa late last year making it significantly more difficult to sell porn online if you want to accept Visa cards. While it's unclear why exactly PayPal and Ebay are doing this, PayPal and Visa's corner on the online payment market is going to lead to some sort of change in the business of online porn. [all links except "exactly" SFW]

I'm proud to say I've never paid so much as one red cent for my online pr0n. I don't know why I'm proud of it, exactly, because I've paid thousands and thousands of dollars for more traditionally delivered pr0n.

You know, got to feed the beast.

I'm proud to say that the _only_ link I clicked on was 'exactly'. Then I came over here (sorry) to laugh at vito90 for paying for his porn.

'Tis sad... you spend a few years working with the stuff and you become desensitised to it... The only adult posters up in our office are the really arty pictures. Well... they are after my boss made us take down the A3 arsehole...

Since when is reading Metafilter while at work allowed?

I am positive that someone will fill the void left by paypal and become a very lucrative company in the process. Market dynamics at work. People want porn.

Since when are links to phone sex sites and "adult video news" safe for work

I always assumed that NSFW meant that there were some sort of visuals involved that would get someone busted if someone were reading over their shoulder, my apologies if this is not the case.

As someone who has bought and sold porn on Ebay my issue is not so much with the individual choices as it is with the ability of Visa [and PayPal?] to pretty much set the standard for what people can buy and sell. If you read the Forbes article, it outlines some other businesses not in the porn industry that are getting busted because they do point-of-sale work for companies that do deal in porn.... It seems to me like some sort of backhanded way of dealing with the less-scrupulous porn dealers who aren't up front about credit card charges, figuring you'll either be too embarassed to contest it or they'll be too impossible to get in touch with. Visa is trying to make itself de facto cash while at the same time limiting what you can buy with that "cash" that's creepy to me.

I recently saw an economic figure saying that the legal portion of the adult-sex industry (videos, internet, mags, etc) make up for 10% of our country's business income. (sorry I can't find the link)
It will interesting to see if paypal and the others backflip on this decision or create loopholes just-in-case they realize they were wrong Why would you want to reduce you business income on a service (paypal) which is widely used by many websters? That doesn't make any sense. Unless of course, your corporation is run by Bible-belters who have sex with the wives with the lights off.

I recently saw an economic figure saying that the legal portion of the adult-sex industry (videos, internet, mags, etc) make up for 10% of our country's business income

That was from Eric Schlosser's (Author of Fast Food Nation) new book "Reefer Madness", which claims that 10% of the American economy comes from the illegal pot trade, migrant workers, and pornography.

Hmm... is there some economic connection between pot, migrant workers, and pornography?

Anything that hastens the demise of paypal is good news. Maybe the porn industry will come up with something better.

While the PayPal and Ebya things have caused some problems in the online community, the reality is that most people knew it was coming and have already solved the problems involved.

It puts a minor squeeze on the low end Amature market, but they will move to another PayPal like company and that will be that - life will go on as usual.

BTW - the Visa issue is not a big deal... it costs about $750 a year to use Visa for adult purposes and most of the sites that care about it will simply pay the money :)
