the Japanese are very formal and old-fashioned -- displays of affection, anger, etc are considered bad form and are to be avoided at all cost

No hugging? Good Christ they must think we're like whores here in America then. Not really, many Japanese cite warmth and friendliness as Americans' best asset (or only one, these days). But it has taken quite a while for my mother-in-law to get used to me hugging her. When my wife is going over to her house, I always tell her to give Mom a big smooch for me, which I know isn't going to happen. About 60% of Japanese weddings are Christian style white weddings, these days, and you should see the hemming, hawing and giggling in rehearsal when they have to kiss, [mortified expression] IN FRONT OF THEIR PARENTS! The looks of horror on my Uncle's faces when I go to hug them is one of the funniest things ever. I have four uncles, they are all from 5'3" to 5'6", weighing about a buck forty each. I'm 6', 215. Whenever Mom and I leave Japan they all know they're going to get the big squeeze from me, and they hate it. But my aunts all just cackle in delight. Japanese got to loosen up a bit.
