For those of you who don't know most of this is a parody of discussions in the popular half-life mod counter-strike

"This isn't Starcraft. Those Koreans don't stand a chance."

As racist as this might be, it's funny because it's completely true (for some reason obsessive Korean gamers seem to completely rule Starcraft, by far the most popular online RTS).

Ryvar ain't lying. StarCraft is a friggin' national sport in South Korea. They have dedicated cable channels just so you can watch games between top rated players. With play-by-play commentary.

The funniest thing to me about the Korean Starcraft phenomenon is that every single quasi-historical RTS game now includes a Korean faction for sales purposes, despite the fact that Korea historically was not a wholesale expansionist, had very little military influence outside of its borders, and was constantly at the mercy of its more powerful neighbors. Sure, it had its share of military heroes, like the admiral Yi Sun-shin, but a world power?

"Conquer the world as the mighty British, Romans, Turks, or... um, Koreans."

And I can't believe that people are still playing CS.

Erhm, back to Rise of Nations.

Wow, DaShiv, I really hadn't played an RTS *since* Starcraft, until Rise of Nations (which ROCKS MY WORLD) came out. The inclusion of a Korean faction in that game, to me, was no different than having an Aztec faction.

What other games feature a Korean faction, just out of curiosity?

"Elite defense analyst Thomas Franklin points out that clan [US] has repeatedly refused requests that they install Punkbuster. "They have no credibility. How do we know they're not cheating themselves? What a bunch of whiners." "

Quality.

And I can't believe that people are still playing CS.

Its cheap/free, you don't need even a recent machine to run it, and it is good at what it does.

WolfDaddy: Age of Empires 1 (as the Choson) and 2, Civ 3 (not RTS), Rise of Nations, etc. I can't think of any recent strategy games with non-European/Mesopotamian/Egyptian factions that didn't feature the Koreans. Why Korea, aside from appeasing the Korean strategy gamer's market? A conspiracy? A coincidence? Depicting a historical Korean empire that I'm ignorant of? Or did I miss some notable exceptions this pattern?

There are some pretty bizarre faction choices in RoN, but I think it's partially to make their single player Risk-like "Conquer the World" campaign work properly in terms of geographical distribution.

Darke: I haven't played CS post-Punkbuster, but on pub servers it used to have the highest lamer-to-player ratio I've ever encountered in a game. Outside of clans/pw'd servers, I can't imagine people putting up with that for years.

Then again, maybe things are much better now that the fad has died down some.

damn, you guys beat me to the whole korean thing

that was the funniest line in the article, by far -- I read somewhere that something like HALF the population of Korea had played Starcraft at some point. insane.

oh, hold on, it IS after 7pm now... Rise of Nations time here too, I guess...

BBspot hasn't been funny for a very very long time, in my humble.

With regard to the Korean thing, I'm just not up for a long essay, but the cable channel referred to above is here. It's part of basic (5 bucks a month for 30 channels) cable here. They feature fewer Starcraft games than they used to, but it's still the bread and butter.

Why Korea, aside from appeasing the Korean strategy gamer's market?

The Koreans labour under a massive collective inferiority complex, mostly as a result of relatively recent history (nealry 40 year brutal occupation by the Japanese, war and subsequent partition, all following on immediately from the collapse of the hermitlike Choson Dynasty, in which the majority of the population were effectively slaves). This manifests itself in interesting ways, to say the least, but explains, I believe, a great deal about the national character, all the way down to minutiae like this.

I've been playing Counter-Strike since the later beta days. I think it's been 4 years now, maybe.

If someone can show me a -better- FPS that deals with strategy and teamwork with some basis in reality I'll make a shift. Until then, this game is a lot of fun and if you've got some old graphics card without 3d features you can still play. But I'll be owning you at 1600x1200@100fps :) I've found that the gear you have really does make all the difference in it beyond your connection's latency.

I've been playing Enemy Territory from Splash Damage and Id a lot for the last week. it's a lot of fun and anyone into FPS multiplayer games should check it out. it's 250mb but it's free (as in weed)
