Is Metafliter.com taken?

If you want something done, do it yourself; tired of the browser timeout that came when he mis-spelled the domain name of one of his favorite (and most-visited) sites, this enterprising young man took matters into his own hands. But I encourage you to take his advice and not mess with him while looking for backdoors.

So... I wonder what the story is behind the other (much more attractive but even more reticent) typographical neighbor?

Slashdoy.org reminds me of the old Hell.com, circa 1995 or so.

I always find myself typing "slashdort" and "metafitler". And "washingtonpsot". Today, for some reason, I kept going to metafiler.com.

And I share 3-4 different computers throughout the day at work, so I can't just create bookmarks. As for why I'm trying to type "metafilter" or "slashdot" while working...

I plead the fifth.

If he was really trying to be useful, why not just make slashdor.org automatically redirect to slashdot.org?

slashdog.org isn't nearly as cool as its name would suggest. Not cool at all, in fact.

Poor kid. I used to be a poli sci student with a bad website, too.

And don't mess around here!

Funny you should mention it...
MetaLifter, self-contradictory since next week
and self-linking since right now

I have been feeling rather blorted lately...
There's a long and mind-numbingly boring story behind that page on metalifter.com, which actually dates back to April Fools Day 2000, a lame spin-off of the then lame meme: 'the last page on the internet', and the only 'one-off' bit I did in my oneswellfoop era that did NOT get me hate e-mail from at least one a-list blogger. I've been using it as my 404 page on my other site(s) after I saw the MeFi threads on the Best 404's. I do have other plans for that domain (nothing that'll give Matt anything to worry about - I think), but wasn't ready to debut it when this obviously-related topic showed up on the blue. Further apologies for the graphic which I made with the Paint program on a Commodore 64. Come back after the holiday weekend, and I'll have something better for both... I hope.

Still going strong: meatfilter.

I'm not absolutely certain, but I suspect adam may have been being sarcastic, there.

I thought there was a rule against posting sarcasm without a winking smilie ;^)

And I have a piece of meat in my fridge since November 2000, and it's going strong, too... Isn't that ironic...

That slashdor.com site links to a real winner, Geniuideas.com - here a sample idea of genius!

However, there is actually a genius idea implicit (well....subgenius, alright) here: the "ridicule-driven site advertisement" model - construct a site which seems to take itself seriously but is really so ridiculous that people on Metafilter and elsewhere in blogdom are tempted to link to it!

Hey hey, I'm off to found my newest company, "Ridicule Overdrive", Inc.

Why do people type in the URLs of sites they visit repeatedly? Haven't they heard of bookmarks?
posted by languagehat at 6:46 AM on July 4, 2003

I have never bookmarked metafilter. I have no idea why, but it certainly has never bothered me.

Actually, I think I know why, now that I think of it: it's faster for me to type it than it is to search for it among my bookmarks. Yeah yeah, I could organize my bookmarks better, but that would require effort.

Enable Internet Keywords in Mozilla and 'mefi' is all you need :)

We now return to the Russell Draper Follies...

Because I can type [ctrl-L]metafilter.com[\n] quicker and easier than i can type [alt-b] and visually scroll through a bunch of bookmarks, or worse yet, reach for the mouse. I use bookmarks for the opposite - things that i find interesting, but am likely to forget where to find them, or even that they existed in the first place.

Hey, I have metafilter and metatalk as buttons on my Links bar in IE. It's so sweet.

I have all my bookmarks in a personal toolbar on Mozzie. Simple, quick and arranged into folders according to website theme. None of this typing nonsense.

I am excellent. My browser 5k1llz r 50 1337.

Bookmarks are for obscure and interesting things I stumble across while wandering around the web that I know I will never see again if I don't save some record of them.

Any site I visit regularly, well, it's easier just to type the URL than to try to remember where I stashed the bookmark.
posted by Mars Saxman at 1:05 PM on July 4, 2003

On a Mac you can automate this by dropping a folder with url links - of sites you regularly visit - into the drop down menu. The url link launches the browser automatically. Presto! - two browser clicks, click down, hold, scroll, release - and you're there. Or use the browser book mark function - whatever floats yr boot.
