Hey, just in time for the new Pirates of the Caribbean flick starring heart throb Johnny Depp. It couldn't have been better planned by, say, a PR firm. Don't forget to Drink Pepsi Cola. posted by squirrel at 7:35 PM on July 8, 2003
Yar, prepare to be boarded, ye scurvy squirrel! I could care less about any Disney movie, especially one based on a theme ride. They fooled me with "The Country Bears" and I, for one, won't get fooled again. posted by Joey Michaels at 7:52 PM on July 8, 2003
Todd Levin claimed many months ago that in fact pirates were the new robot.

dhoyt: where do ninjas fit in the hierarchy? posted by slipperywhenwet at 8:39 PM on July 8, 2003
Thanks, Joey Michaels - this is great. I wish the artists had been credited on some of the woodcuts - just curious as to the origins of some. And we need more images of monk riding...much more.
For the record, not only are pirates the new robots and the new monkeys, they are also the new orange, the new Legos, and the new Mini Coopers. Or maybe smarts are the new Mini Coopers. Unless smarts came first, in which case Mini Coopers would be the new smarts.
But I'm pretty sure that monks came before either one, so maybe Mini Coopers and smarts are the new monks. Monks probably didn't get very good gas mileage, but from what I understand, they were a very quiet ride. posted by iconomy at 9:03 PM on July 8, 2003
where do ninjas fit in the hierarchy?

Best. Post. Ever.
I've prayed for a FPP such as this. If you're not the next coming, then you're obviously a harbinger.
I'm totally flipping out over here. Are pirates even mammals? If not, they're still cool... NOT monkey cool, mind you. But still...
What??!? We had, like, 5 Kronnenburgs left... posted by squared at 9:16 PM on July 8, 2003

But do they run on unleaded? posted by dg at 9:19 PM on July 8, 2003
I think they run on benedictine.
Now I fondly recall this metafilter thread, in which we were all reminded about pirates and their amusing ability to pillage and plunder, courtesy of the Secret Fun Spot. posted by iconomy at 9:33 PM on July 8, 2003

pirates forcing a man to drink to excess
Personally, I've never found coercion by pirates necessary. Seriously, though, let's not forget George MacDonald Fraser'sThe Pyrates, and the pirate comics subplot of Watchmen. posted by raygirvan at 6:14 AM on July 9, 2003

Here in Seattle, we're spoiled by the Seafair Pirates who drive through downtown sporadically during the summer and make quite a fun spectacle. posted by vito90 at 6:57 AM on July 9, 2003
vraxoin, do you remember waaaay back when on Delphi, I told you and Roberson you needed shambling zombie pirates in all your stories? Well, look at this fine mess. They're cool now and we've been beaten to the punch.

Craving more rich pirate booty?
Kind of a personal question, doncha think? posted by MrBaliHai at 8:20 AM on July 9, 2003
OK, I was going to make a semi-intelligent comment on the plethora of new pirate video games now available (Sea Dogs II rocks! Oh, they've called it something else...) and how the Depp film is just a teaser for the real swashbuckler coming out this fall with Russell Crowe as Capt. Jack Aubrey of the Royal Navy in the big-budget adaptation of Patrick O'Brian's "Master and Commander" but then I read
Rated AAAARRRRRRR.
