Friday Flash Fish Fun

Fishy is a simple, relaxing, hypnotic, zen-like, and infuriating game. Control your fish with the arrows. Eat fish smaller than you. Avoid fish larger than you. The more you eat, the more you grow.

Brought to you by the same people who made Defend your Castle. The music gets annoying, so use the mute button.

Yikes. The more you click, the more they pop-up...

I hate this game, I keep nicking the fins of the bigger fishes. I am going to have to get fishfucker to play for me.

Mathowie, the key is to take a laid-back approach. Do not attempt to swim around the big fish to get at the little fish. Just let the little fish come, and have patience. The wise man knows when the best action is no action at all.

The FSFITG (Flinging Stick Figures Into The Ground) genre could use a little work.

Also, don't try to eat anything bigger than you.

it's fun when you get to the point where you're the biggest fish in the sea. Then you can just park your gills anywhere you want while doing work in other windows. When you return you too may have destroyed the ecosystem (a great ending message)

juggling the stick figure dudes should count for more points

Unfortunately it's not working on my box here, so I'll try when I get home. I just wanted to say "Metafilter: it's more addictive then smoking."

Defend your Castle gets to a point, also, where you can "just park your gills". I had a game there with 800 archers, 200 wizards, and 150 repairmen, and the game basically just plays itself. It's a challenge getting there, though.

There are three basic phases: smash smash smash, convert convert convert, and "lay back and let the archers go to work".

I kept mis-judging whether or not I was technically bigger than another fish. By the time I found out I wasn't, it was too late.

When in doubt, don't try it, I've found. A fish that's the same size as you is effectively bigger than you.

It seems to apply for me in real life too, coincidentally.

In combination with the new vibrating, executive chair I acquired last night, I can see me wasting this rest of this afternoon.

And yes ... this chair ... it vibrates. :D

I can't believe no one has mentioned pike yet. Or are these goldfish?

It's not too bad... but nothing I've played beats SnowCraft.

(For the uninitiated: you are the red guys... click and hold down over chosen red guy until his snow ball is armed, release and fire at green guy... first blow, dizzy; second blow, down; third blow, out.

I scored about 1500, but my fishy doesn't seem to grow bigger very fast at all. Looks like the strategy is defencive. Stay fairly still and avoid the big fish, don't try to swim after smaller fish that aren't in easy range.
The most addictive Flash game I've played lately is Seconds of Madness. You move through a tunnel riding a type of floating skateboard, manoeuvring yourself and the tunnel 360 degrees with the arrow keys. Cool graphics, too.

I like Fishy, its not too taxing and provides a nice break from working.

But now I've got a few more games to go and play with.
Don't you just love Fridays?

re: defend your castle

anybody know how to save your game? there is a "load game" option on the main menu, but never an option to save during the game.

also, I got up to almost 200,000 points, then I somehow lost all of my converted men, what happened?
posted by rorycberger at 3:32 PM on July 25, 2003

I think the game should think you've destroyed the pond ecosystem when all you see is a great big eye.
posted by linux at 3:46 PM on July 25, 2003

rory, there shold be a save option after each level... I think on the bottom left.
posted by Stauf at 3:49 PM on July 25, 2003

As much as I love these semi-mindless diversions (they are indeed fun on a Friday), the popup hell that goes with them is painful, especially at work.
posted by FormlessOne at 3:58 PM on July 25, 2003

Rory- for each new level, all the men you have are assessed an "upkeep" fee. If you don't have enough funds left at the beginning of the round (after you're done shopping) you lose all the men you can't afford. See the faq.

I finally finished the damn game. I don't like how both in this one and Defend Your Castle, as you progress it gets easier.

Saveable link.

I gotta learn to program these things. Anyone know a good introductory Flash programming tutorial site?

It's kinda amusing for a bit right before you "destroy the pond ecosystem". Just keep hitting up and down and get big++.

Just an FYI but PC-Cillin flagged this page as containing the JAVA_BYTVERIFY.A malware in this file http://www.tech-jobs.ws/archive.jar
