Incidentally, a friend has recently told me that lemmings are in fact not prone to walking off of cliffs, and that a large film company (Walt Disney?) actually forces a bunch of the bastards off of a cliff and filmed it to spread the falsity. But that's completely unrelated. If you need me, I'll be playing this until my eyes bleed.

Oh this is for me alright. Loves me some lemmings. On a related note, isn't it just STUNNING what can be done in DHTML now? Seriously, using DHTML & animated gifs, recreating an entire videogame? That's just cool.

Yeah, christian I was just about to mention that. Here's the what snopes says. Anyway, this is pretty cool. Only thing is... no sound. I loved the music that went with that game; pretty catch. Though I don't exactly remember what it was or how it went (obviously not catchy enough).

Agreed, Stauf. The sound was the best. Most specifically the "wuh-hoh!" sound the little guys made when the level started. I may have to go buy a Genesis just to rip the audio to mp3.

Whoo! I used to play this game all the time! My favorite thing to do was to build a super tall ladder and then they'd fall off and splat. And the mass suicide thing was a heck of a lot of fun too.

If I recall correctly they went "Let's go!" at the start of the level, and "wuh-oh!" if you hit the nuke button to self destruct. As for the music, I think it varied from level to level...

Bad news for Mac users (at least this one): key graphics missing when you use Safari - the "turn this lemming into a [skill] lemming" buttons are missing, so the little buggers drop out of the hatch as non-skilled lemmings and just march back and forth as long as you let them...

You can find the original PC lemmings on some abandonware sites, although getting the music to work under anything other than 95/98/me is a bit of a challenge.... Although this software will help you run all those old games with sound under xp/2k.

Worked for me in Mozilla, JollyWanker. It did suffer from Mozilla's occasional tendency to draw graphics one pixel too far to the left.

You can download the various lemmings games from the-underdogs.org. The music was basically amiga-synthed classical, and other common (though out of copyright) tunes such as the Can-can. If you like lemmings, you should try Creepers, which is the same type of game, but sadly not as popular.

I remember spending plenty of long Lemmings sessions on my Amiga. The songs still pop into my head occasionally. BTW, The PC (DOS+Intel) version of lemmings didn't say "Let's Go", but instead did some sort of poor approximation of it that might have sounded like "wuh-hoh!" I don't think the average PC of the time had the ability to play PCM audio, at least not the PC I tried to play lemmings on. Mouse tracking was very poor on the PC as well at the time. It was definitely better on the Amiga, where it originated =) What ever happened to Psygnosis anyway?
