Well thank you so much for these, very cool! I just finished reading Carter Beats The Devil - I'm stunned to see the posters, I had no idea the degree to which the ostensibly fiction book was lifted from the real life & work of Charles Carter. The book is highly recommended, by the way. posted by jonson at 9:10 PM on September 14, 2003

Another great post, crunchy, but easy on the front-page wordiness, man; who do you think you are, Miguel?

Man, what's up with all the little devil-cupids? Weren't they even more religiously conservative back then? Did magicians embrace an overtly 'devilish/evil' provenance? Boy, I certainly couldn't imagine any modern-day magicians aligning themselves with devilish forces. posted by PigAlien at 7:56 AM on September 15, 2003
I think the devil motif was always taken with a grain of salt as far as stage magicians were concerned, much like the ghosts and ghouls of halloween. Then as now, I suspect that no one seriously thought that magicians could truly perform their magical feats, but they willingly suspended their disbelief. posted by crunchland at 8:00 AM on September 15, 2003
