Not Japanese, anathema.

I was in Kyoto Station yesterday and there was one of those Japanese girl groups onstage, local unknowns, six pubescent girls about 13 years old jumping around in unison in matching outfits, singing inane songs about love in terrible nasal voices. People walked by mostly unamused, some bored people sat on stairs and watched to kill time, but there were about a dozen otaku aged 30-45 standing right up against the stage, singing along with the girls, dancing along with the girls, doing rehearsed hand motions and trying to catch the attention of their favorites. It was truly disgusting to watch and imagine the future news headlines about stalking and restraining orders.

Why? Why do I click on this stuff when I know it's going to put some asinine, repetitive song in my head?

Oh well, at least it got rid of the badgers.

I'm very confused.

The reference, explained.

The thing they do with their hair toward the end made me think of the girl from The Ring.

That was okay, a little too derivative of Chris Cunningham's work though.

Astroturf Marketing watch.

Listen, seanyboy, you can make that argument about almost anything but it's going to be weak. I could care less whether anyone buys the damn record. I thought the video was pretty cool and that others might enjoy it too. So, in short, please go back to sitting on the crapper with your back issues of Adbusters. Or is that just Astroturf Marketing for Adbusters?

Can we please keep personal attacks out of this? Is metafilter becoming Usenet for goodness' sake?

planetkyoto: otaku are always disgusting.

Oh my God that video is scary.
posted by insomnyuk at 12:42 PM on September 20, 2003

Y'know what's scary? All these girls are wearing the same clothes, and none of them are trying to dress like Madonna! What is this planet coming to?

So if the music kept going, were the girls going to metamorphosize completely into Anime cartoon characters? Did the school's principal save these girls from a fate worse than Sailor Moon? I have to admit I have no idea what this film was about. Independent thought in a totalitarian society? No cuz all the girls are kinda jumping together. Dancing is evil? English sentences get japanese girls hot?

Oh, and was I supposed to be turned on by all that? Cuz all I was getting was a stomach ache. Maybe that was the tuna fish I had for lunch.

If the only way to stand out is to put insignias on socks, there's something dreadfully wrong. Quick! Somebody convince Shrub to invade Japan (or is it China) so those poor girls won't have to spend yet another semester without Gap Jeans! This is appaulling!

It's a telling indictment of the effects of repetitive electronic beats on the minds of the young.

It's also only 1/2 of the original LFO, Mark Bell, with no Gez Varley.

just so everyone is clear, the teacher is speaking chinese, not japanese.
posted by delmoi at 3:45 PM on September 20, 2003

yeah ok.

The song and video sucked.
posted by delmoi at 3:46 PM on September 20, 2003

Something just occurred to me.
Why were the girls' faces morphing into Nhee Ghee.
No really, I'd like to know.
*shiver*
That's just not right.
That can just ruin your day.

I keep coming back to Metafilter, finding an interesting link, then reading the comments and regretting it. Beh.

Some of you Warp newbies want to check out Aphex Twin.

It was truly disgusting to watch

When I saw Puffy Amiyumi last year in Vancouver, there was a row of middle-aged balding guys pressed against the stage singing along like their life depended on it. Gro-oss.

Careful, scarabic: it's loud.

And it rocks. But the windowlicker links are busted, iamck.
posted by squirrel at 11:36 PM on September 20, 2003

Dunno. I got about halfway through and all the obligatory toggling in and out of slow motion annoyed me. Is the end amusing?
