Well, it is a tabloid, so I'll wait for more reliable info before I put any stock in it.

(last week at the supermarket checkout all the tabloids screamed about exlusive photos of J Lo and Ben's wonderful wedding (that was cancelled days before) -- must be tough making up stories and getting them to print before the truth happens)

Er...I mean...TabloidFilter!

Still, it will be interesting to see if this story develops "legs" and gains credibility.

Come on. Not that I put too much faith in tabloids, here or there (though the line distinguishing yellow journalism from the rest is blurring more and more, I'd say...), BUT
You can't convince me that taking Saddam by force would be better than negotiating with him for his surrender. Given the chance, the administration should jump at it. Just think of the number of fanatics it would disempower. If I were a statistician, I'd wager the lives of american troops that alone would save is substantial.

If we triangulated his position, we'd just blow the shit out of the area, no? Squish him like a bug, and then people could deny it he was there, that he was killed, etc...

His surrender would show him to all that he's gone, which is really the hump that the populace needs to get on with their lives and start policing themselves more effectively. So long as there's the remote possibility that US troops might withdraw due to casualties, and Saddam might be back in power again, people will be hesitant, shall we say, to aid their liberators...

bush would much rather imprison saddam at area 51 with the aliens and that guy who invented a water-powered car, and then mount an agressive expansion of his War On Brown People With A Different God.

sounds to me like the u.s. gov. accepted the agreement and don't want people to know so that they can't get blamed when he's mysteriously assassinated in belarus.

i don't trust <em>any</em> of these people.

UK Tabloids are slightly different to the US supermarket tabloids to be honest.

The mirror is a left-wing populist paper which was dragged into a price/ideological war with Murdoch's rightwing populist Sun and has been trying to regain some of its previous credibility ever since. Sometimes successfully, sometimes not.

So dismissing this as another Batboy story doesn't wash to be honest. However much of a wounded animal the paper is compared to its more illustrious past, it does occasionally pull off some amazing investigative journalism.

Whether this is one such case it remains to be seen. Personally, I can't believe the US Govt would take such a ridiculous political risk, there again these are the Freedom Fries people, so anything is possible.

The byline is 'Paul Martin', and that should really have made the news editor <a _top href="http://www.csmonitor.com/2002/1213/dailyUpdate.html">think</a> <a _top href="http://www.smh.com.au/articles/2002/10/25/1035504883622.html">twice</a> here. I'm surprised he hasn't quoted Sayed Anwar for corroboration.
