MintSauce, thanks. My students and I are gathered around my computer, shivering in anticipation. Will Dec. 17 ever come?

The wife and I saw a commercial yesterday that said the ROTK trailer would run exclusively with "Secondhand Lions" at theatres this weekend. mrs. dickman predicted that I'd see it today on the net. I asked her why she thought so. She replied, "Because there's always a bigger dork than you on the internet."

Metafilter: There's always a bigger dork than you.

omg that was awesome...! waiting 79 more days is going to be even more difficult than it was before, gah.

Okay, I've GOT GOOSEBUMPS. Jesus, they've done a good job with those books. Goosebumps. over a MOVIE.

Me too with the goosebumps, aacheson. Glad to know I'm not alone.

TheOneRing.net also has a frame-by-frame analysis of the trailer.

Be kind to people's bandwidth and use the Bittorrent trailer download link if you can.

Add me to the chorus of people slobbering all over themselves in anticipation. However: was anyone else slightly disappointed with the brief glimpse of Shelob? I imagined something a little more gigantic and horrifying and majestic. From what I saw, it looks like an updated version of the Rancor monster.

Since Shelob appears at the end of book two, I thought that they delayed her appearance in order to start off the third film with a big bang. I hope they do.

On preview: the link homunculus gives hints that this might just be a "part" of Shelob, which is encouraging.

It seems fairly clear from the trailer that what you see of Shelob is the cephalothorax, or "heady-fang bit" as I like to call it. You can discern the upward slope of the abdomen, where I would imagine most of Shelob's bulk would reside.

Not watching any trailers whatsoever so as to ensure that all imagery in the film will be fresh as lettuce from the farmer's market.

fresh as lettuce

Normally I would agree, but even the trailers have gone against typical hollywood grain and NOT shown all the best parts in the commercials, at least if we can go by the first 2 installments and the way they were handled. It really does just make your mouth water a la Homer Simpson and give you goosebumps of anticipation!!

great... now i won't able to sleep for the next couple of months.

Yeah, I've watched it once, cuz I had to have my fix, but will now return to my habit of shunning all the spoilers, promos, and hype that I can possibly avoid, so as to go into the movie with a clear head.

You can get the trailer from Apple's website now - high quality, and unlimited bandwidth.

I looked at the frame-by-frame analysis (don't want to look at the actual trailer as I am at work) and even that gave me shivers. I have never looked forward to any event with as much anticipation as I look forward to this movie (I know, that makes me a huge geek).

I stopped after the first couple pages of stills because I don't want to spoil the surprise.

IT'S GOING TO BE SO GOOD!!!!!@#$!!!!

Here's a link to use if you want to save to your desktop, or wget it, or whatever (worked for me five minutes ago).

I agree with what archimago said: the trailers for this series have been superb, and haven't given the game away like so many others.

I'd like to offer a SPOILER for hardcore fans. I spent a few days home sick last week, and in my weakened state, entertained my self by going through some of the bonus material on the 4-disc extended edition DVD of Fellowship.

Peter Jackson noted in one of the commentaries that ROTK will not contain the final chapter of the novel: The Scouring of the Shire. I found this an understandable choice, since plot-wise it would have to add a lot of time to the film. But it's a shame, since I think the entire series is, in a certain light, merely a set up for this chapter, which makes the core statement of the book.

Anyway... it was buried deep in the DVD. Thought I'd share.

thanks scarabic--but did you really think you were the only tolkien geek who listened to all four commentary tracks on that thing? and why did you wait until now???

from nerve's unsexy list:

5. Lord of the Rings. The movies are fine, but did you know that if you read the trilogy three times in a year you actually get your virginity back?

Scarabic,
That's too bad. I thought it was a pretty important part. And I was hoping to see the passing out of Middle Earth of Gandalf and Frodo and the Elves. But it's understandable. It's a big hunk of literature they have to cover.

aacheson - Do they NOT show Frodo and Bilbo and Gandalf departing for the Gray Havens? How'd you hear? That's really a criminal omission if so. Worse than what they did to Faramir.

muckster - I bow down before you. I didn't even listen to the other 3 commentaries :)
posted by scarabic at 5:17 PM on September 29, 2003

aacheson - the fact that they don't show the scouring of the shire (if they don't) has very little to do with whether or not they show anyone departing for California the Ageless Lands in the West.

I'll be disappointed if they don't show tSotS, but I certainly understand how difficult it would be to fit that in. Makes you wonder how they're going to tie up Sauruman, Wormtongue, Rose, and various other threads.

Maybe they changed tact wrt tSoS - Rosie Cotton is listed in the cast - unless they just show her as a token hobbit at the end...

1. The buzz is that the Grey Havens ARE included.

2. See the extended DVD of The Two Towers coming in November for new scenes setting up the "family dynamic" of Denethor/Boromir/Faramir, which may help to excuse/explain the Faramir changes. The Faramir changes didn't bother me a bit.

I don't know how they did it, but they shot about 4 different endings for Saruman/Wormtongue to give PJ some freedom and to put others off the trail. (I think one of them involved him being pushed out a window at Orthanc..)

Have been drooling over the trailers since TOR.N put up that Japanese one, it's nice to have a higher quality though.

Ha! I too have spent an unreasonable amount of time looking at Peter Jackson's LOTR related blah. In an interview I saw, he states that his favourite scene in the trilogy is the passing to the west at the end.

Which could just have been a tease, or him showing off that he's seen the end already. It was before the release of the first film IIRC.

rotk is going to be aprox 30 minutes longer than the previous 2 theatrical releases so that gives quite a bit more time to include more book plot...

wheee...! it's ridiculous how happy i am about this movie.

Whenever I play a quicktime file, there is a terrible echo on the audio, making the sound worthless. Does anybody know how I can fix this? I have looked at the quicktime support pages and can't find anything about it. Thanks
posted by wsg at 10:30 AM on September 30, 2003

wsg, I had that problem too.

Running Win2k, fixed it by going to sound control panel, Audio tab, unchecking "use only preferred devices", then clicking Advanced under Playback, going to Performance tab, and clicking Restore Defaults.

Of course, that explanation makes it sound like I did those things with a sense of direction and purpose, but actually I was clicking madly and cursing all the while. I'm pretty sure those are the last two things I tried.

just for the hell of it, here's my review of The Two Towers. I think it explains why the Faramir changes (and others) seem unconscionable to me. I don't see how additional material will undo gross sins in the theatrical version...?

[warning - extreme geekiness]

You two crack me up.

Squirrel - you should just be glad they wrote Radagast the Brown out of the script. His flatulent battle with Tom Bombadil in the Forest of Dingleberry is a low point in the series.
