Do you mean the lockpicks or all of it? I don't see how lockpicks could be called a self defense product. Batons and stunguns could be used for self defense. From what I could see of the knives and swords (site was slow), they are cheap junk. People carry knives as a self defense weapon, but not swords which would be impractical.

I bought one of their lockpick kits about 4 years ago. It's rather a useful tool. I've been able to open filing cabinets at work after keys are lost, get into my house when I locked the keys inside, get my snacks from the vending machine at work when it tries to take my money and keep my food, all kinds of useful things. Really, for your average house lock one can just as easily pick it with a bent paperclip(which was what I used in such circumstances prior to buying the kit). It's just a bit faster with the proper tool. And much cheaper than getting a housecall from a mobile locksmith. As for the rest of the product line, well, I don't really care for it. But whatever floats peoples boats.

Sites like this (that seem to cater to some secret agent/ninja fantasy) always make me feel like an apologist when it comes to my ubiquitous pocketknife. It's a tool (a leatherman) and I keep it so damn sharp because a sharp knife is more efficient and just plain safer to work with than a dull knife. But folks who see it are like, "Oooo... you gonna cut me?" Bah.

Blue Stone, perhaps your dinghy requires appropriate lights for its seaworthy designation? And perhaps one of these fine products would meet the regulatory requirements? While it would not have direct bearing upon the seaworthiness of your vessel, I expect you might wish to bring these accessories along on your boating excursions as well.

A friend gave me this entertaining book on self-defense. The author claims a sharpened sabre is the best weapon for home defense. You can both stab (to stop someone coming through a window) and cut (if you have more room), it has a high intimidation factor, the bad guy can't grab it from you like he could a baseball bat, and if he's close enough to hit with a sabre you will have no trouble pleading self-defense in court. Most important of all, the risk of accidentally killing someone near and dear is smaller than with a gun.

I guess the CD holder could double as a ninja star carrier and the hair clipper set could give you that intimidating buzz-cut, the pliers could be used for pulling fingernails etc but, like trbrts, I have no idea how you could use a calculator for self defense (counting the bodies, maybe?).

Knowing how to pick locks has, of course, bad uses. It can also be a lifesaver. My neighbor called from cross town after her daughter called and said she was committing suicide. It took me 30 seconds to pick the lock and check on her with over a minute for cops and ambulance response. She recovered, but being able to quickly respond could've made the difference had she chosen a more violent means than pills. Lockpicking is a fairly simple, if practiced, technique to learn.
