Now it's officially a trend: Attacking the privacy of those who invade privacy (bottom of page) by publicizing their information. What's the verb for this going to be? I think "Barrying" should be a contender.

some articles floating around recently about how telemarketers may begin calling mobile telephones, as number portability becomes an option in the USA. In tune with publicizing phone numbers, I plan on not only busting them for calling it by making sure my mobile number is valid on the Do Not Call registry, but I'm sending the bill for my mobile phone, itemized, to every telemarketer to pay for the calls they made to me.

Maybe if I could legally license the use of my personal information (you know, *facts* about me) to marketers and get paid for it, I'd sing a different tune. However, the fact that these companies claim ownership rights to my demographic data and have a free speech right to sell it for a profit makes me stand behind the cliche "What's good for the goose is good for the gander." Let them choke on their own methods.

I just wish the bastards would target their marketing better. I mean, look at amazon. It's gotten to the point where it recommends me products I actually physically bought in other stores. Getting inundated with offers for stuff I actually want isn't so bad - it's just when it's poorly targeted (like the wine store ads I've seen on cartoon network) that it's really annoying.

Veritron, yeah that is the problem, their so called targeting is as wide as spammers. I don't need any penisenlargments etc. DM and Telemarketing always offers me what I least want. Amazon never recommends me anything I'd actually want, unless I already had it for years. Keep adding "have it" and voila, it'll show that product to me tomorrow again. Best is that it shows me PC games, I only drive *nix and mac.

Yeah, the NYPost columnist, to me, was an example of this formerly witty and poignant strategy being dragged into a mundane tit-for-tat slapfest. Tina Fey's version was, I thought, back to the high standard - more subtle, funnier, based on a more important example, and not motivated by one's own personal involvement. But the point is, now anyone can, and will, do this. And to prepare for the onslaught, I say we should have a verb ready. ...Anybody? Anybody?

I smell a technological arms race brewing similar to spammers vs. spamblockers and RIAA vs. filesharers. In the future, all telemarketing calls will come from payphones in Eastern Europe and untracable numbers in Thailand.

Tim Wise at blackcommentator.org has done the same with David Chang's 866 number after the release of Ghettopoly, previously discussed here. Not that we couldn't get Mr. Chang's number elsewhere, but when you deliberately put it up for people to call, that usually gets the blood flowing. I can say I find this trend amusing - and wait for one of the MeFites to come up with a term for "barrying"
