The link to Victoria Principal's pic was particularly frightening.

I think this person might be somewhat full of it. The Sarah Jessica Parker comparison is dubious, as is the J-Lo one. The comparisons seem to be more of age and photography... a lot like the Celebrities without makeup site. Shoddenfraude (sp?) for celebs...

Hmmm, I think this is pretty much the opposite of the celebrities without makeup site. The idea with that one is that celebrities don't really look like how you're used to seeing them, and the photos that really were candid paparazzi shots were pretty noticeably different from the magazine covers. Here, the differences definitely have a lot to do with age - would Melanie Griffith really live up to this site's appearance standards if she'd never had any work done, or would she be in the "They Need Plastic Surgery Really Bad" column? The idea that celebrities' appearances aren't real is a lot more reassuring to the average person than the idea that they aren't attractive.

michelle pheifer looks about 1000000 times better in those 'after' pics, as does al pacino, priscilla presley, as does jlo. marie osmond .... well ... you can't polish a turd.

whoever did that site probably needs a nosejob themselves and is just mad they can't afford one.

In the always interesting question of how we all choose to appear to each other, I think plastic surgery is the the most innocent, boring - and transparent.

Far more fascinating are the other kinds of make-overs and masks we use when dealing with public life (e.g. on MetaFilter), which Erving Goffman, in his indispensable book The Presentation of Self in Everyday Life, merely touched upon.

That said, I'm with NortonDC - the Wildenstein Bride is tragic; a cause of pity rather than satire.

But we all do it, in our own little ways. That's what makes it interesting. Socrates's "know yourself" and Sartre's "be yourself" are the only effective antidote.

(My long-winded way of saying "good post + good thread".)

Well, these are celebrities, and they are marketing their goods just as any business with something to sell must do. Restaurants change menus, shoe stores update their stock, and politicians nip and tuck their positions and platforms - all in the quest to give the buying public what it wants.

I think the real moral of this story is to get the very best practitioner possible, and abide by his/her professional objective standard of what will look "good". It does appear that some of these people have made their own (very unfortunate) decisions about what sort of enhancements they should have, and defeated the original purpose. Others, as has been pointed out, look great.

some of these shots don't show any surgery at all. Noses never stop growing, so Don Johnsons might just be a man aging, it's not smaller, nor did it change shape. J-lo thinned her lips? C'mon, J-lo just got older, and her nose is exactly the same.

It's not easy to age when you have recieved a lifetime of attention based on how you look. I hope anyone considering plastic surgery would make sure they have done everything possible from the inside out first especially in terms of proper nutrition. Refined sugar can age skin drastically. I think when a person resorts to plastic surgery they are also trying to take care of their mental health as well. A little lift here and little tuck there...who cares what others think as long as it makes you feel better about yourself? But I also believe the plastic surgeons who are recommending implants should be hung by their balls or whatever else is hanging down there.

Poor Loretta Swit...

And they should add the lead singer from Quiet Riot to the bad hair transplant list. I was amazed that during the whole course of the Quiet Riot Behind the Music episode, not one comment was about about how he was nearly bald during the Mental Health era but now sports a full head of fluffy, curly, mullety hair.
