No matter where you go... there you are. It is indeed Trysteroic that the self-suing Fox Television, of all media conglomerates (and seemingly, one of the many scions of Y o Y o D y n e ?), should have had the brilliant idea to turn "The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai" into a TV series. Perhaps the selected few at the Banzai Institute will find a way to get Dr. Banzai to defeat the evil John Joe Millioniare.

I love that movie. The triumvirate of geek cult films is, in no particular order: The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai, Big Trouble in Little China, and Real Genius (which, I note, is finally out on DVD; must go to store...).

cerebus: i understand the rumored (read: untrue) speculation of big trouble...'s tie to banzai might make it rank high, but wouldn't repo man fit in that slot better? there is nothing more amusing than watching geek boys duke it out over which is better, banzai or repo man. just sayin', is all. (though btilc is quite the film. no disrespect meant.)

Oh okay, ursus_comiter, you're right, it's not exactly the freshest news on the block. But things are weird in the karmic flow lately. To wit: Pynchon inspires (sort of) Buckaroo Bonzai; BB is originally made by Fox Movies; Pynchon not that long ago appears on the Simpsons, also on Fox; Fox considers making BB a TV show; Bush hijacks the election (hey, it's mifi); Fox drops the BB show but runs the inane "gambling show" Banzai; Fox sues itself. You could almost substitute Big Bootay for JohnGeorgeBush and Yoyodyne for Fox, but then, I think I'm having an Oedipa Maas kind of day.

All the movies mentioned in this thread deserve that cult triumvirate thingy, even if it adds up to more than three. Although Real Genius didn't work for me personally, I can respect other people's appreciation of it. Unlike Blue Stone, who actually thinks he's right and others are wrong. One man's trash is another's treasure. There is no right or wrong here. It's all B-rated "Ed Woods Spinning In HIs Grave" claptrap. i.e.: it's all bad in a good way. Personally I would prefer someone write a tale about the generation after Banzai. He and all his Buccaneers lived fast and died hard and left good lookin' corpses - or maybe some of them left without a trace. There's children of the old guard, and there's devotees and those who carry the flame, and the world once again requires the services of a team of guitar lickin' superduper doogooders, but what they have left can't carry a tune. Come to think of it.. Maybe it's best to leave well enough alone. =)
