I was >< this close to posting the same thing. i've been all over Google, even Ask Jeeves, looking for an answer. Nada. Right now the page is a little sun thing, which looks a lot like Freedonia, which I don't even know what it is. I have no idea. On preview, it's been down a few days.. since maybe the beginning of the week?

We're having server problems and working on them -- I hope to be up in a day or so again, but it's exacerbated by my crazy travel schedule. Please direct your friends to this note, and ask for their forebearance in sending email asking what's up with Boing Boing. I'm getting several hundred of these a day, and it's gotten so that answering those messages is actively interfering with my efforts to reestablish service. That's a bit of a relief, Cory. I was beginning to think either you guys had chucked in the towel or the Forces of Darkness had somehow jacked your domain. so, uh, when are you putting the comments section back up? maybe there's some kind of way to use movable type's comment system so you can use mt-blacklist to deal with all the trolls...

Nutrition for the mind: several times per day take a dose of Metafilter, at least once per day take a dose of Boing Boing (throw in some Geek Press, Memepool, NYT, WSJ, Drudge, Robot Wisdom and ALD for good measure). This works for me. Hope Boing Boing is back soon.

There was once a post on bOINGbOING asking and answering why Metafilter was down. It was a couple of years ago and people who knew what was going on with MeFi commented. I don't care for Xeni's posts - way too much porn for my taste, nor Cory's fixation on Disneyland, but I certainly don't agree with johnnydark, it's well worth a daily check-in to see what else they've got going on. Hope they're back up soon.

BoingBoing *definitely* needs comments again, even if the B2 team are too busy to read them all. I'm not sure whether they disappeared for technical or personal reasons, but I hope for the latter and I hope they return soon. While the presence of comments can open a public avenue for meanspirited, mindless criticism (such as the 'narcissistic wound' crap seen in this post's comments...), in most cases, comments add noticeably to the posts and give the readers a venue to interact and exchange thoughts and ideas. Comments are community. They also serve as a kind of open source fact checking system. The press sometimes criticize weblogs because they lack the oversight of editors and fact checkers. However, comments associated with posts change this equasion. As a case in point, I noticed an inadvertent factual error in a BoingBoing post a few weeks ago. Since there was no longer a convenient way to point it out, however, it wasn't pointed out at all. I believe in commenting, and, despite its flaws, I even believe in anonymous commenting. I have had people leave me comments which contained abuse, death threats, etc., but the positive aspect of the comments I have received in the past have far outweighed the negatives. Despite the seemingly endless stream of bile that some spew into the void, they still amazingly find time to read what you have to say. Obviously, spare time is easy to come by for those who need to get a life. ;->

I for one really miss boingboing, and I could understand someone saying they didn't like some aspect of it or another. To each his own, you know. But, c'mon -- Disneyland and pr0n?!? -- how much better can it get? Jeeesh! [Actually: boingboing is usually a reason to get up in the morning, even if I don't care for everything they blog.
