A similar story can be found in HST's The Curse of Lono, except the guy dropped his watch in an airplane toilet. Recommended reading.

It can just be instinctive sometimes to try and grab something you've dropped. I've tried to catch falling scissors myself. A friend of mine worked in a KFC in London, Ontario, and told me a story about a guy who used to work there and who dropped his watch into the fryers - so he reached in to get it. The oil in those things is kept at 375 degrees fahrenheit.

Also thinking of the Curse of Lono, on reading this story and noting that no cell phone was found, I wondered if he really dropped his dope in there and "cell phone" made a better story to tell the authorities.
