Breaking up is hard to do. Far be it from me to encourage celebrity gossip, but Anne Heche, formerly one-half of the Famousest Lesbian Couple Ever, was found in a Martin Lawrence-like state, confused, addled, and ringing strangers' doorbells. Just a nice little "WTF?" item for your day.

I think "Breakup Leaves Heche Mad With Grief" would have been a better headline than "Wandering Anne Heche hospitalized".

I think Heche quickly eclipsed DeGeneres after they got together. If anything, DeGeneres should be wandering around saying "'Mr. Right' was my all time best performance."

What provokes me about the article is the subtle approach that the story creates- it makes it sound as if it's "love" that caused Ms. Heche to wander to a complete stranger's house.

Have you ever been so shaken up from an ending of a prolonged relationship that you were unable to ponder concisely and the only functions you had were the abilities to walk aimlessly and utter a strange chain of broken vowels?

I doubt it...

I'm tempted to state that I feel Ms. Heche perhaps took a powerful combination of substances to allevate her emotions, causing her mind to further become more distraught. The inner pain that is associated with the parting of a love one can be unbearable at times but unfortunately, masking agents are widely available despite the effects that it has.

Then I rephrase myself- love did have an effect on Ms. Heche... quite a distant indirect one and hardly profound at all.

Ellen is a brilliant stand-up comic and a terrific side player in sitcoms. (I first rollicked to her deadpan delivery in Open House, a largely wan Fox sitcom, lo these many years ago.) She wasn't so great as the center of a show about her, although it got better when it wasn't patently false about her sexuality. The best parts were when she and "cousin" Jeremy Piven lived together. And she was appropriately frothy in the HBO walls-could-talk thing. But she was really brilliant in her return to stand-up, also HBO special. It's her natural place and talent.

Heche is a so-so actress who fails to generate chemistry with almost every male co-star I've seen her paired with. I do wonder if the parody Steve Martin perpretrated in Bowfinger where his "girlfriend" Heather Graham, who's obviously slept with anyone in the production who can get her anything, shows up at the end with a new pal: "she's one of the most powerful lesbians in Hollywood!" Heche, of course, dumped Steverino for Ellen.

Crosby, by the way, was the father of the child of Melissa Etheridge and her "wife".

I'm not actually sure this is over. Hey, Meg Ryan went back to Denny Quaid, after Russell Crowe.

Yeah, actually -- I have.

If you've never been through anything like that -- if you've managed to keep far enough away from letting that kind of all-consuming emotion into your life -- then I suppose you can consider yourself lucky.

But I won't agree.
