Hello, My Name Is Mike And I Have A Dream! How very unusual! Who the hell would want a thing like that? Talk to me about it, Mike...[In other news, PayPal dream projects get way out of hand. Flash or Quicktime required for all links except the last, which is a road test.]
That car is so in demand that they wouldn't even give one to David Coulthard, Formula 1 driver for West McLaren Mercedes. He has to wait in queue to get it, and he has to pay for it.

Wouldn't it kind of take away from the car's beauty to have tens-of-thousands of NAMES WRITTEN ON IT?
Maybe, with a €171.71 group contribution (one hundredth-euro per member), all of MetaFilter could get credited on the car.

Forget donating to Mike. I think I'll start a paypal dream site to hire a hitman to knock off Mike and steal his car, should his SLR dreams ever become a reality. Nice link to that review, Miguel, I had to wipe drool off my keyboard a few times.
Also, what Cranky and Wendell said. This car should never, ever be adorned with a Wheaties logo.

Things had certainly come down a long way since the great days of Faust and Mephistopheles, when a man could gain all the knowledge of the universe, achieve all the ambitions of his mind and all the pleasures of the flesh for the price of his soul. Now it was a few record royalties, a few pieces of trendy furniture, a trinket to stick on your bathroom wall and, whap, your head comes off.

Irontom, you are really provincial, as there are a number of even more expensive autos these days. Plus, from other articles I've read, ain't no one in the USA getting an SLR for $450K--the dealer markup has them going for over $700k. Still, if all of a sudden I came into, say, US$100M, I would get one and donate an equal amount to a set of transportation-oriented charities.
