Mario in the News A Japanese person (cannot translate the name, sorry) has completed the classic NES game Super Mario Bros. 3 in just over 11 minutes. Fortunately he recorded it for posterity. (uses Windows streaming video.) Speed runs have been gaining in popularity lately. What game would you like to see abused in such as fashion?

even if it was recorded on an emulator with the guy rewinding every few seconds, it's still neat... I'd like it is someone did a speed run on Dragon Quest VII, tried to get it down to 50 hours or so.

I am reminded of the time in 1985 when I figured out a simple strategy for the game Q*bert, and played it for 14+ hours on one quarter. I had so many extra lives, I could walk away from the machine to go to the bathroom and vending machine. Had to kill myself over a hundred times in order to end the game when I was just too damned tired and my eyes were too sore. Yes . . thank you . . . my brag is over.

I seem to recall from the last post that there were lots of naysayers saying it was faked, and no real evidence. Music doesn't seem accelerated, he probably did use a turbo fire. All that said, where is your 11 minute slaughter of super mario 3? Mine is sitting squarely in the closet next to my perpetual motion machine, that I'm itching to pull out and revolutionize the auto industry with.

Heh. Nethack. I don't know what the record is for fastest ascension, but I bet it's not under 24 hours. Dang, beat me to it. Considering I've never ascended (and not for lack of trying, I've probably got several months of actual play time in since 1987) I have no idea how long it takes but even getting down to the castle takes me a few hours.

In the comments on this page, someone posted a link to his web page and translated it. The translated link appears to be broken now, but this comment summarizes best:

"I'd like to believe he was a god, but he does say on his website he was using an emulator. With the emulator he dropped the speed of the game down to 1/30 and frequently saved before difficult areas. He also apologizes for not mentioning that in the video and for ruining the dream of a purely played game. Still impressive though, I suppose, but he's not The One."
