This is a fetish with a suprising amount of possible collectibles, when you think about it. I wonder if he's also considered collecting stewardess novels like the Vicki Barr books, a girls' series about a mystery-solving stewardess published in the forties, fifties and sixties. Think "Nancy Drew takes flight". Odd how this job got so romanticized.

I remember back in the late '70s when United Airlines updated their stewardess' uniforms to do away with the minidress outfits the stews wore. Some wag remarked, "No longer will we be able to eye the friendly thighs of United."

I actually kind of LIKE that one, tittergrrl. Rather mod and would have looked good at the time. But then I'm an editor with a font fetish. There were appearance requirements for stewardesses, which led to them all being young, slim, and pretty, and dressed in short skirts. Didn't hurt the inclination to romanticization of the job any.

From a history of stewardess uniforms in a journal called 2wice: "The first uniforms date back to the early 1930s, when aviation was growing into an industry. In those days stewardesses were called 'airline hostesses,' an oddly dainty label for a woman who was dressed like an enlisted man. Indeed, the link between aviation and the Air Force was neatly expressed in that hostess uniform -- she wore a military-style suit that, except for shallow darts in the jacket and a skirt instead of pants, made little concession to la femme."
