DVD File is reporting that Michael J. Nelson of Mystery Science Theater 3000 fame will be providing audio commentary for an upcoming re-release of Reefer Madness. Will this mark the first time a DVD commentator openly mocks the film?

No. That would be, to my knowledge, Matt Stone and Trey Parker making fun of their own movie: 'Cannibal! The Musical'. Considering Matt and Trey are drunk at the time (it's a drink along commentary) the cast/crew comments are actually better than the dialogue for the film.

well, there was Carrot Top on the Rules of Attraction DVD comentary, for no reason i can imagine. i've never thought of him as funny before, more annoying actually, but he was hilarious on the commentary. at one point, a girl tears up a card given to her by an admirer, and he chimes in, "Aw man, that's cold. Don't tear up your tickets to the Carrot Top show like that..."

I'll buy this DVD, but I'm going to have to dig out my old Shadowrama cut-out of Mike and the 'Bots and affix it to my TV screen before I view it. It'd be too weird to just hear Mike disembodied voice without the visual reference as an anchor point.

I want a series of films with audio commentary putting Mike Nelson and Joel Hodgson in the same room with Roger Ebert. That would be powdered lunacy. Just add water.. and assorted power tools.

Will this mark the first time a DVD commentator openly mocks the film? The "Spinal Tap" special edition has Spinal Tap complaining bitterly throughout the commentary about how they are being portrayed. It's like having a delicious sequel.

Soderbergh does a fine job interviewing himself on the Criterion DVD of "Schizopolis." It's the most hilariously pompous, self-serving thing I've ever heard.

The commentary for Bloodsucking Freaks contains a whole truckload of deadpan self-mockery. "Yes, dance, Ralphus, dance!"

The Hidden DVD has a lot of brilliantly bitter commentary from the director. It's not often you get to hear the director dishing the dirt on the stars. But I don't think it was conscious mockery.

When I was in college, we would get stoned and watch "Reefer Madness" every time it was shown in 194 Chem. This would be great!
