Thanks, hama, I was looking for a penguin to take to the next meetup, and I always prefer shopping online for live animals.

Theoretically a penguin would fit in the South Bay social scene just fine but I'm concerned he or she would miss the snow just a bit more than I could bear.

I'm pretty sure domestic penguins have been discussed on MeFi before, namely because I remember asking a question that I don't think anyone answered - so here goes round 2:

There was some random television documentary on some random channel a couple years ago that included footage of a domesticated penguin in norway or finland or somewhere. (as you can see, i'm really up on the facts.) They showed this penguin wearing a little backpack and walking up to the store and back to retrieve items. I know of one other person who saw this show, but she has just as much clue about what the hell it was about as I do. Does anyone know of the show/segment I'm referring to?

I'm confident there was no drugs or alcohol influencing my television watching, fwiw.

OK. That's one handy penguin. These birds have been gravely underestimated.

Meanwhile.....I'm interested in purchasing a few thousand domesticated penguins to stock my new surplus aircraft carrier.

Q: Why does my penguin keep bumping into walls?
A: Penguins, like humans, are prone to eye deterioration over time. Vision correction may be necessary for your penguin's welfare. We highly suggest laser surgery correction as many penguins do not take well to eyewear.

Um, okay....

Well Duh.

Eau Claire is an 'old fashioned town' and lacks a 'grid layout'. Now it does seem to be a valid address.

Eau Claire is in the 574XX series zipcode and 531XX is closer to Milwaukee.

The phone exchanges were 83X, but it seems they did add that exchange to EC.

Hankins : The penguin in question was in Japan. It had become tangled in the nets of a fishing vessel and was adopted by a family in Hokkaido (i think).

Of course, my source for these facts was a "Don't Animals Do Crazy Shit" type show shown here in the UK over christmas, so I'm probably not reliable. I did a quick google but could only turn up oblique references, but that should give you something to go on.

The penguin in question was in Japan.

Yep. I saw it too. It might have been Hokkaido, but I distinctly remember the backpack, and the thing walking to the store.

Hankins - I saw it on a program here in the U.S. called "Amazing Animal Videos" and it was the best thing I've ever seen a penguin do. The show is on Animal Planet.

I saw that penguin on Animal Planet, also. I think his backpack might have been a penguin itself. It was really precious.
