Can't make it to Times Square to see the crystal ball drop? Well, in Atlanta, they're dropping a peach. In Raleigh, an acorn. In Miami, an orange. In Mount Olive, NC, a three-foot lighted pickle. My favorite? In Lebanon, PA, they're dropping a six-foot-long bologna....and in nearby Cleona, they're dropping a two-foot-wide pretzel. (The state capital, Harrisburg, is dropping a cow painted to look like a strawberry.) But they really pull out the drops in Key West, where there are not one, not two, but three drops: a pirate "wench", a conch shell, and a drag queen named Sushi, who will descend in an eight-foot-long red high-heeled shoe.

I don't think it's possible to beat the Possum Drop...but a co-worker just pointed out that they drop a pickle in Dillsburg, PA, and in Falmouth, PA they drop a goat.

Meanwhile, at my work, we shut the kitchen down for TEN WHOLE MINUTES, and snuck off to the lounge to get (even more) schnockered. And we changed the TV tuned to Dick Clark to a listings channel to get a more authoratitive (and, let's face it, less "Picture of Dorian Grey"-esque) countdown. You may pity me... [dramatic pause] now.

I never understood exactly why something had to DROP. Going up always seemed more appropriate to me. Seriously, the whole ball thing has always bothered me.
