So wait, is this entertaining because of how totally unfunny the stories are? (Hope I'm not spoiling it for anyone.)

maciej, awkward and clumsy attempts at humor can be funny. I am amused by friends who try to crack a joke and fail.

"[This is awful]"

Sorry, I ought to clarify that - the content of the site is awful. Bringing it to our collective attention wasn't.

They're the jokes from Woody's new film!

Here's the one Jaron singles out as his funniest: Whooping Mooses.

My four-word review: neither absurd nor funny.

The a:hovers, though, are absurd and funny.

Writing amusingly is a lot harder than it looks. And not everyone has the same sense of humor. For instance, I think Cary Grant/Kate Hepburn movies are hysterical, and certain Comedy Central shows are beyond idiotic... but I'm willing to bet more people watch the Man Show than have seen The Philadelphia Story.

Does anyone actually think these are funny?

It is so very hard to dissuade people of the notion that they are entertaining.

Jesus you guys are prigs. This happens every single time someone posts something they think is funny on Metafilter. Maybe eventually they'll just post about security updates to various open-source software projects and the occasional obituary.

Hildago: Bullshit. This shit just really is the pits. I knew somebody would eventually feel the need to criticise wholesale everyone who said so. But this shit really is terrible nasty backwards crap.

“The woman ran over the man she loved and killed him deader than a doornail. The impact of the collision drove his cell phone deep into his brain so that not even the most skillful mortician could restore his face and the wife had to have a closed coffin at his funeral.

From "Cell Phone"

Sure, there's more to the story, but this kinda takes the
chuckles out of it, no? (and I could see how this small phrase
could be part of a funny story, but the rest of the story is
just as dry and humorless as this - is there a made-you-look
joke going on here?)

To someone who thinks this is funny, please explain how,
even approximately, or post a quote that illustrates where it
really gets wacky.

This must be the funniest story I have read since dinner.
posted by sebas at 10:38 AM on January 14, 2004

gregb1007, I am actually impressed at how consistently unfunny the stories are, even though the author is clearly trying to be funny and clearly convinced they are hilarious. That does actually kind of make it funny. My thought process as I clicked through the various items went like this:

1) "Hey, this isn't funny..."
2) "Wait a second, this is so thoroughly unfunny, it must be on purpose."
3) "Oh my god, it's not on purpose!"

At this point I laughed (a little).

dejah420, tell me you love Bringing Up Baby? I've never met anybody who finds it as funny as I do (very very).
posted by rainbaby at 11:43 AM on January 14, 2004

rainbaby, I do! I do! I adore that movie. Especially the scene at the police station. It's the sort of thing I think I'd try. :)

Um, why would anyone want to read these poorly written, unfunny stories?

Thanks for the crappy link to some crappy stories. Oh boy!
