They seem to flame Gore pretty well too on his connections to Big Tobacco in light of his sister's death from lung cancer. Tit for tat. posted by cowboy at 12:59 PM on September 1, 2000
It's no secret Gore is a hypocrite, but I hadn't realized that Cheney was such a dunderhead. Gore is no better and no worse than any compromised career politician, but Cheney and Bush want to get rid of the Anti-Ballistic Missile treaty. WTF? posted by wiremommy at 4:25 PM on September 1, 2000
Wiremommy, everyone knows the anti-ballistic missle treaty is halting progress!
we need a good arms race to kick our defense sector back in gear. make the world safe for our children.
or something like that. I'm joking actually. posted by mathowie at 5:05 PM on September 1, 2000
That was a well-executed skewering (and well-deserved). With Cheney, you've got it all: the drug war, the Gulf War, pro-apartheid, anti-ABM, oil money, CIA, corporate welfare -- and now throw in: personal cowardice and ersatz gravitas.
Cheney would make a perfect James Bond villain: wicked, irredeemably corrupt -- and he even looks the part! posted by johnb at 5:16 PM on September 1, 2000
it's really easy to skewer the straw man, isn't it?
it's a lot harder to do it to the real thing. cheney's a whole hell of a lot better man than clinton ever was or will be, and despite gross misrepresentations by folks like johnb, he's about as close to a "real" person and american as you can hope for after a lifetime in politics. he's loved in his home state, and widely respected among bi-partisan circles.
say what you will about his record or current stances, but he's NOT a coward, nor is he "wicked, irredeemably corrupt". posted by mmanning at 9:18 PM on September 1, 2000
Mmanning, if you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen. I don't think Cheney cares that you rush to his defense with tears in your eyes, but it is sweet. posted by dhartung at 9:24 PM on September 1, 2000
sorry, didn't realize we were in the kitchen, dhartung. i thought we were airing opinions. and i'm just airing mine, which happens to be based on personal experience.
and for what it's worth, i don't really think that dick or any other public figure cares what anyone on metafilter says positively or negatively about him/her or anyone/thing else for that matter.
thanks for your concern for my well-being, though, it's sweet. posted by mmanning at 12:23 AM on September 2, 2000
