has anyone heard "the grey album" by DJ Danger Mouse? it sucks. sounds like he dropped the beatles white album right on top of jay-z's black album. it's supposed to be a big deal but i didn't think it was good at all.

suprfli, I love The Grey Album. I've been playing it over and over again. It's better than The Black Album. The White Album, of course, is a classic. Dangermouse is an impressive dj-- check out his work on Jemini's "Ghetto Pop Life" album. 99 Problems, December 4th, and Change Clothes are all better on The Grey Album than on The Black Album. Your negative reaction may be caused by the fact that you heard The Black Album before you heard The Grey Album. I heard The Grey Album first, and then hunted down The Black Album, which I found inferior.

Being a fan and creator of sample based music myself, I really don't get the appeal of the Grey album, and I've tried to get into it over the last couple of weeks. "99 problems" is a standout track, but I think Jay-Z's lyrics are just crap. That's just my opinion. Opinions aside though, I would like for someone to explain what it is about the Grey Album that is "innovative" or "original". There is nothing about the use or manipulation of samples or the juxtaposition of the source material that hasn't been done many times over.

I hear that Jay-Z released a vocals only version of the Black Album specifically to give underground DJs the ability to do things like this. Seriously, the part of this that I think is interesting is the inclusion of production tools. What a great idea.

It's the discussion of illegal art that is so central to the distribution of creative material on the internet that's thrown Danger Mouse's manipulation into the spotlight. "99 problems" is a standout track, but I think Jay-Z's lyrics are just crap. That's just my opinion. Mine too. I've said nearly those exact words to everyone in the last month who has asked me about it.

I'm an electronic musician... Personally, to me, the Grey Album sucks hard... really hard. It's too bad too, because I'm sure someone else could have done it a whole lot better... Why did DJ Danger Mouse have to be first... But maybe that's why it is put together so badly. Most people aren't aware of the differences in Electronic music production and DJing. Two wholly different arts.

For many people that's probably true. For me, as soon as I heard about The Grey Album (almost two months before the EMI story broke), I was excited about it. For people of a certain age, The White Album has a special status. In my own case, it was one of the first albums I ever bought that was part of an artist's back catalogue. It was actually my introduction to The Beatles (besides what you hear on the radio). And I think Dangermouse did a great job with it.
