"Please, my dear brothers, let your wives and sisters go to the voter registration process," Karzai told a gathering to mark International Women's Day. "Later, you can control who she votes for, but please, let her go." The liberation of Afghanistan's women continues.

I know a long history of subjection of women will not be changed overnight, and progress is being made - but baby steps like this still make me groan.

The extension of the franchise to woman in Europe and the U.S. in the first decades of the 20th century was frequently associated with claims by both opponents and supporters that women would mostly vote as their husbands saw fit. (Supporters cited it to win over men who valued male rule of society, opponents cited it as evidence that the process would be debased by the introduction of non-autonomous electors.)

Good God, this is not what I meant when I said he should find a way to celebrate International Women's Day!

If women would just act like Laura Bush we'd never have these problems.
