I live in Fairbanks and love walking through the ice park when both the multi-block and single-block competitions are over. Because of all the ice, the temperature in the park is probably a full ten degrees colder than the rest of the city. Some of the multi-block pieces can stand 10-20 feet tall. They are super impressive during the day and just as gorgeous at night with colored lights behind the ice. But probably my favorite part is the ice playground for the kids - mazes, merry-go-rounds, and tall slides all made of ice.

Rhapsodie - you live in Fairbanks? Why? What do you do there? Is there regular industry there? Did you move there after living in the lower 48? Should I be emailing you all these questions instead of jacking this thread?

A similar competition came to Provo UT during the 2002 Olympic games ... I took a few photos I show off sometimes, too, when things like this come up (the former link has more/better pictures, though).

I live in Fairbanks as well, and the ice park is a wonderful place to visit. I used to take my kids when they were smaller to play *in* some of the ice buildings, slides on the slides, etc. The sculptures are pretty amazing, particularly up close when the light is right! I live in Fairbanks because it is a great place to raise kids. Not too big, not too small. Moved outside (Oregon, Washington) for a number of years, but decided Alaska was a better place for me, igloos and all... Incidentally, the Ice Alaska site is built and maintained by a former web development student of mine (who hasn't used anything I taught her as she journeyed to the realization that she didn't want to be a web mave... but she does a fine job nonetheless :)

Looks more lively than the one in Northern Finland. The Snow Show in Rovaniemi partners one artist and one architect and have them sketch out a sculpture out of ice, which would then be built locally. The University of Lapland is helping out...somehow. (via Virtual Finland)
